We took public transportation to the catacombs which was very straight forward. We arrived just in time to buy tickets and join the English speaking tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and quite funny on occasions. Most of the facts about the catacombs can be viewed online but the guide was great at explaining and taking questions. The tour lasted about 40 minutes and was very worthwhile. The catacombs are set in beautiful surroundings, we walked through to the next catacombs and on to the Appia way and spent a few hours walking. We would recommend this as the scenery and surroundings are beautiful.

This unexpected sight on the way from Via Leonina to Piazza di San Pietro in Vincoli is well-known due to its connection to the Borgia family. The lover of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, who became the Pope Alexander VI, Giovanna Caetani lived in a house above the covered passage. Actually the building complex belonged to Margani, and later to Cesarini and Orsini, but it will forever hide the stories about intrigues and murders.
