If you want to have a complete idea of the Testaccio neighborhood, you can't help but go to the Nuovo Mercato Testaccio. It is located exactly in front of the old Mattatoio (the slaughterhouse).
It has recently been renovated according to a minimal and contemporary style, in which the geometric rigor, the white and the clean lines create a pleasant contrast with the colors of the goods.
The covered Testaccio local market hosts 100 food stalls including butchers, bakeries and street food products and is a point of reference for food lovers.
Walk among the colorful and tidy fruit, bread, meat and fish stalls and take a look at the food kiosks, all very cute and well laid out.
Seeing, however, is sometimes not enough.
The pleasure of the palate is also important and then perhaps you can stop to taste a sandwich with the famous Roman roasted porchetta. Or, if you prefer, opt for a fresh juice and a slice of pizza.
The beauty of this market, historic for the ancient history of the neighborhood despite its new location, lies precisely in combining the old tradition with daring modernity.
It is also a place that surprises you with its variety and where you always find clothing, footwear, accessories and all kinds of household items.
Conceived according to the scheme of the open-air markets in the squares of Rome - open on all four sides, covered and protected from sun and rain but with transparent and perforated panels through which light and air filter - the architectural project was designed by architect Marco Rietti.
    highly recommended.

Colorful, busy, energetic multi-ethnic market with everything from Chinese peppers to Moroccan spices … not to mention lots of fresh produce and fish and meats of all kinds (pig trotters, anyone?) Definitely worth a visit. There is also another building with clothing, Indian saris, bolts of fabric, etc.

It is located in a huge square, in the Monteverde district.
We didn't imagine it would be so big.
We discovered it recently, after some visits and tours in the area.
It is a large and lovely market, with many different stalls where you can find a bit of everything: fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cured meats, cheese, breads, cakes, but also housewares, medium quality clothes, underwear and houdsehold linen.
An added value is that there are also producers, which also guarantees that you get seasonal products at 0 km.
There are also stalls with organic produce at very reasonable prices, various regional stalls and bread, endless sweet and savory delicacies!
    In short, seeing is believing.
The prices are lower than other local markets.
    We will be back.

The square where once, many years ago, people used to go looking for a small but original antique print to be framed, is very beautiful.
The square has always been very beautiful, but now the original antique prints, etchings, aquatints and engravings are just an old memory or an impossible desire.
Everything has become very commercial and touristy, and the kiosks are now only very cheap souvenirs shop windows for tourists.
Anyway a tour around the square is always highly recommended to admire the façades of some noble palaces in Rome.

This covered market is on busy Via Cola di Rienzo in the Prati district, on the side of the Tiber River where the Vatican is located. I went to the market several times because it was close to my hotel, and bought fresh fruit to take away. Besides fruit, there are vegetables, meat, fish, etc.---including reasonably priced store merchandise such as kitchen gadgets. There is a small cafe on one side of the main entrance off Via Cola di Rienzo, and on the other side is a tiny but well-stocked convenience store. The main aisle of the market runs through to the back entrance onto a quiet square.
I liked the fact that the market is spacious but not sprawling. All the aisles are quite wide and have colourful banners hanging down from above. Even though carved into the top over both entrances are the words "Mercato Rionale," the actual name is Mercato dell'Unita. (The small square behind is Piazza dell'Unita.) If you look up over the front and back entrances, you'll see the date of construction (1928; built during Mussolini's time). When I was there about five or six times, I didn't see tourists---just local people going about their daily shopping.

I went here while my wife went clothes shopping down the street. Prints, postcards, lithographs - if you love beautiful, unique art at reasonable prices - this is the place to go. These are independent sellers in small stalls - not all of which are open at any one time. Many of them do not speak English - but all are helpful, knowledgeable and have beautiful things for sale. Bring cash, not everyone accepts credit cards.
    What a find!

I try to time my visits to Rome so I can go to this flea market, which runs on the first and third Sundays of each month (unless it's a holiday). It was raining this time, but the market is covered, so we stayed dry. I got vintage jewelry from my favorite bead lady. Unfortunately, this time my favorite scarf lady was not there. It's always a fun experience. The flea market is near the Mausoleum of Augustus, the fountains outside the Ara Pacis Museum and the Tiber River. Combining a walk along the river and those other venues can make a fun morning.

This is a cute little market which was nice to meander through in the mornings on our walk from the hotel to the sights. The leather jackets and bags looked very good quality. However it probably isn’t worth the journey to visit if you are staying far away.
