What travelers are saying
- JP673Lincolnshire, UK46 contributionsIMPORTANT NOTE - the FIRST SUNDAY of every month the park is free to enter. Book your tickets on line or queue at the ticket office to get them.
MORE IMPORTANT NOTE - the online guide sales DO NOT reduce their ticket prices for the first Sunday of the month so you will be paying full whack. Guided tours are available at the entrance.
You ideally need at least three days to get the whole of the archeological park in. We went on the first Sunday in December and there was quite a bit of maintenance work going on so you couldn’t get in to everything. This wasn’t a problem as we were only here for the day.
Don’t bother with the audio guide. It costs 10€ and you have to surrender your photo ID as a deposit. You are better off downloading the FREE app from the park (just search Pompei Archeological Park Free Tour on AppStore or PlayStore). It gives you a live map of the park and free audio tour and photos.
Travel to the park is supposed to be a free shuttle but we paid 3€ each for the bus from the train station to the park. It is a 20 minute walk each way if you’re up for it.
Once in the park it’s pretty much a free for all. You can follow set routes or just amble along at your own pace. The roads are tricky and uneven with high kerb stones to manage too.
The various cafe’s serve great food and drink which are fairly priced considering you’re a captive customer.
The toilets were fair to middling. It must be an Italian thing that public toilets do not have seats fitted 😱😱😱😱
We travelled by train from Rome. I recommend travelling cattle class with the masses. We stupidly paid for Business Class which turns out to be a crap. We had to get our seats cleaned and wiped down due to previous passengers spilling food and drink on them. Seats only partially recline and the toilets are grim considering this is supposed to be Business Class.
