Sassi di Matera
#1 of 103 things to do in Matera
... every terrace I can honestly say it ranks as one of my most memorable and authentic experiences on my various pilgrimages and even my teenage children thoroughly enjoyed and embraced the experience Don’t miss it
The city is peaceful and wonderful for walking and learning about the people who built the city and lived in the caves with the families and animals.

Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina

I visited this museum in June 2017 with my American family and Italian grandfather and considered it one of the highlights of our time in Matera.
Materasum Ipogeo

Amazing and interesting excavation, and the kids also enjoyed looking for fossilized shells in the ceiling, of which we found many.
Our kids found it amazing and so did we.

We discovered this nice little (but very informative) family museum.
They prepared different routes for children and adults, as well as a break to taste their product.
Piazza Vittorio Veneto
#22 of 103 things to do in Matera
It is a visual treat, filled with visiting school children, hawkers, tourists and locals passing through.
The locals bring their families and socialize in this Piazza.

Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario
#12 of 103 things to do in Matera
Amazing to see how the families lived and how many amenities they had.
The idea that a large family and their animals occupied such a confined space is incredible.

The entire family along with its animals like horses or chickens lived right there inside with the people.
High quality production, projected onto walls of a house donated by a local family.

Our kids had a great time "rock climbing" and exploring the caves.
I would be concerned about taking a small child.

Casa Cisterna Sotterranea
#28 of 103 things to do in Matera
This cave and many like it was the home of a very large family all living huddled together with animals.
We could never understand the olde life in Matera if we didn't visit this replicated house of a typical family.

Palombaro Lungo
#25 of 103 things to do in Matera
... we were a group of only 4 in this English-language tour, and upon our request, the guide also talked about her grandmother's life in the Sassi and how the government's required move affected the Sassi families.
I have no particular interest in cisterns or water supplies but I found this short tour completeley riveting - as did our children 6 & 10.
