A beautiful museum. Well organized and tidy. Full enjoyment of the basic museum display. For recommendation ! A must visit, even for a short stay in Madrid.

Having a museum devoted to a single artist was a real treat. I was not familiar with Sorolla, but I'm now a big fan. Going through the home of the Sorolla family was such a wonderfully intimate view into the artist's life.

I really liked this museum - there’s a nice collection of ancient “stuff” and some wonderful Bronze Age art if acts from the islands - the female statues are stunning. Make sure you watch the film about protecting the assets during the Civil War bombing, it’s really interesting. Bit tricky to know what way to walk round and no coffee shop but neither a problem.

This was a highlight of our visit. For only 4 euros entry (senior citizens) we spent a couple of hours being blown away by the paintings, jewellery, furniture and other artefacts dating from Visigothic and Roman times up to the mid 20th century. The collector obviously only bought articles which were in immaculate condition. It’s a wonderful collection displayed in his former home with beautiful painted ceilings in an upmarket area of Madrid. It was nice to get away from the busy city centre and walk along the broad streets stopping for a coffee in some of the attractive cafes such as the cocktail and tapas one directly opposite the museum.

At the time we visited, there was no exhibition and the alternative was to take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens, with some important modern Spanish sculptures. The Museum is only a block away from the centrally located Ortega y Gasset Avenue.

One of the few private galleries or Fundacions to reply to us in August when we are aware many people exit the city to avoid the heat. We planned to visit Madrid in early September during the art Apertura but trying to plan a programme for each day was problematic because many didn't have staff responding to emails and phone calls in August. The Fundacion Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson was one of the few which did. We couldn't use their on line booking system but they responded very helpfully that they didn't usually have capacity problems and to just turn up. We did and thoroughly enjoyed the visit from the descriptions of how the Funacion came about (ALSO IN ENGLISH) to the coherent collection. The staff were helpful, informative and admission was free. There was no one else in there and we were able to enjoy Sorolla in a very peaceful environment. More people need to know about this Fundacion.

We visited the place in November, which allowed us to see the Altar de los Muertos. There were two of them available to see for free. Could be combined with Frida Kahlo's exhibition (on payment). Have 1 EUR coin with you (refundable) to put the bad in the storage, before the visit.

This "art gallery" belongs to the Community of Madrid and it offers free exhibitions about modern art, about 4 a year. Big names (Brian Eno, Annie Leibovitz...) have had exhibitions here the last years, but other exhibitions equally are worth the visit. I cannot remember having been once to one where at least one work didn´t impress me. Don´t forget the part upstairs when going to one of the exhibitions in Sala Alcalá, 31.

Wandering down a side street I stumbled across La Imprenta Municipal-Artes del Libro which is a building dedicated to the history of printing books which is open to the public.

There is a permanent exhibition about the history of printing and graphic arts on the ground floor with an array of printing presses and machines dating from the mid-16th century. Looking at these cumbersome and labour intensive printing presses it makes you realize how we take today’s technology such as computers and lazer printers for granted. When I was visiting there was also a temporary exhibition about Clandestine Literature telling the history of illegal printing houses producing literature during Franco’s ban on book publishing.

Entry is free and I would recommend a visit to this building if you are in the centre of Madrid. Indeed, stumbling upon this building was a lucky find - even if the temporary exhibition has finished the permanent exhibition is fascinating.

The building is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 8pm and on Saturdays 10am to 2pm. The nearest Metros are Sol, Tirso de Molina and Latina.
