.This is the Madrid Barrio for people with money. It’s all designer shops, upmarket hotels and expensive restaurants including several Michelin ones. And frankly in that respect it could be in any capital city anywhere in the world. But it’s saving grace is its architecture and design. Large tree lined leafy boulevards containing several impressive mansions laid out in a grid formation, and is a very pleasant area to stroll around. It’s very clean and perfectly safe, but compared to other barrios of Madrid, it’s all a bit sterile and lacking in any real culture.
Yes there are plenty of street bars and cafes, but this is the area where the monied classes of Madrid go to be seen ( and unfortunately heard). So if you are one of these you will fit right in, if not you will probably have an annoying idiot on the table next to you.
It’s an interesting area of Madrid and easy to get to and from using the city’s excellent metro system and I am glad I visited it. But for interest and life give me Barrio de Las Lettras and Barrio La Latina any day of the week.

This is a small triangular Barrio that is sandwiched between Arganzuela to the west and south, Lavapies to the east and Austrias to the north.
Serviced by the metro station of the same name, La Latina is synonymous with beers and Tapas in Madrid and is home to multiple bars and restaurants packed into its narrow streets. Exceedingly popular at weekends when it is elbow room only to order at a bar, the two main streets that are home to the majority of the bars and restaurants are Cava Alta and Cava Baja.
Then on Sunday this district is home to the El Rastro flea market which runs the length of Ribera de Curtidores and adjoining streets, but the advice is to get here early for that as it gets extremely bustling and busy from mid day onwards.
We enjoyed strolling around here and the neighbouring barrio of Lavapies, another interesting area that is trying to balance being one of the lowest rent areas in Madrid and the traditional district for immigrants to Madrid with the gentrification that is now taking place. One recommendation is to make a small diversion from the market to visit the Mercado de San Fernando, an interesting traditional covered market which is home to normal market stalls and bar and Taberna stalls.

We stayed in this area. It has some great restaurants with vintage shops and some vegan restaurants if that is your thing. The area has a bohemian feel and is close to Gran Via and the major tourist areas. I'm glad we stayed here.

We chose a hotel in the Barrio de Las Lettras for our visit to Madrid, and what a fantastic decision that was.
This Barrio is the beating old heart of Madrid. A maze of narrow cobbled streets that house many traditional bars and Tabernas, and independent cafes and small shops. Also home to Plaza de Santa Ana , one of the most intimate squares in Madrid and Calle de Las Huertas, its main historical street.
It is worth exploring this Barrio during the day, but especially at night when it is lively and never dull.

This small square in madrid is surrounded by small bars and specialty shops. A nice place to relax and drink some refreshments, while time goes by.

This is the most important avenue in Madrid. It has many landmarks and historical places. I really like walking around the Castellana and observe the beautiful buildings. There are also many embassies, bars, restaurants, and very nice squares.

Best neighbourhood in madrid! Just one stop from Atocha station and cheaper to stay than the center. Very lively and full of shops and parks.

We first walked along Calle de Santa Isabel when heading towards the Reina Sofia Museum. It is quite a lovely street for most of its length, or at least the part that we were on. There are several nice looking cafes, restaurants, bars and other shops all around. There is also outdoor seating in many places. It's worth while taking a stroll on this road if you have a bit of time.
