What travelers are saying
- MidlandsTravellerLeicester, UK647 contributionsThere is a nice walk along the river to the aqueduct from central Tarragona. The walking paths (search on “Paths of Tarragona for a map) are indicated by yellow signs and paint stripes.
The aqueduct is about an hour’s walk along the river - and is well worth the effort (or taxi / bus ride).
Well preserved and part reconstructed, with the channels for water leading into the aqueduct still quite visible. Little signage or information. Wear walking shoes as paths are rough.Written February 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Very little signage or information in English, but you don’t need to read to experience the grandeur of the setting.
I found the most fascinating part was the excavations of the Roman temple which are just north of the cloisters. It is amazing to think that the cathedral was deliberately built over the pagan temple and that worship kid some form has been going on in this spot for more than 2200 years!Written February 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. No places to sit and only the view to keep you here, so not worth a special visit. However, if you are exploring the city make sure that your route comes here.Written February 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - permiaIreland38,295 contributionsClose to the train station and lovely by the sea it’s a marvellous legacy from almost two millennia ago.
Constructed in the 2nd century CE to stage gladiatorial spectacles it is outstanding in its preservation. Great sweeps of stone seating rows are to be seen, but they are cordoned off so not possible to enter and actually experience sitting on them.
At its apogee it could seat about 14000 spectators for the bloody spectacles and games.
In the 3rd century it became Christianised and a seminal event happened within the arena in 259 when Bishop Fructuosus and his Deacons were martyred by burning at the stake.
Cemeteries from the Visigoth and medieval eras are outlined. Also some walls of a 6th century Basilica are great to see. Later a Romanesque church was placed here in the 12th century.
So it has had a long and varied storied history.Written March 4, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Horse racing and other races took place in front of spectators numbering around twenty thousand. It continued to host games until the 5th century.
We are fortunate that it is so well preserved. Walking around some of the excavated circuits is testament to its size in its heyday.
Many artefacts from the time are displayed. Statuary, sarcophagi and other funerary items are great; a funerary stela has a legend known as the Eutyches Inscriptions.
Ascending to the top level we had tremendous vistas over the city including fine panoramas of the Cathedral.Written March 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - juliaandadam123Ashford, UK1,633 contributionsVery pleased to be asked if I was a teacher (as I am!) as this got me in for free! This is something I’ve never come across before, so pleasantly surprised. I very much enjoyed the history coming to life along the walls and found it all very informative.Written October 27, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - permiaIreland38,295 contributionsUnfortunately we only saw aspects of the grand main museum building in the Old Town. However, while it is under refurbishment, a selection of the treasure trove is housed here.
Tinglado 4 was a former passenger terminal in the port until 1986. From thereon it hosted cultural events, and now serves as temporary museum stand in.
Being the oldest Roman outpost on the Iberian peninsula, Tarraco has a fascinating back story from ancient times, plus many artefacts exemplifying this status.
