On our Kids and Family Gothic Quarter Walking Tour with Runner Bean Tours, our guide Ram, took us to see the archaeological site of The Temple of Augustus. Although you know the Gothic Quarter is the older part of Barcelona, you're not really expecting to see Roman ruins within one of the buildings. My grandkids enjoyed seeing the ruins but, like myself, thought it was unusual to have the four columns displayed in a such a small courtyard/room. But then we had just arrived the day before, after spending several days in Athens, and the columns themselves didn't quite compare to what they had already seen in Greece. The ruins are part of a Roman temple built in the 1st century BC that at one time had 120 columns. At some point, most of the temple was destroyed and other structures built on and around its ruins. The existing columns were discovered in the late 19th century but not restored until the early 20th century. The temple is hidden away on a side street near the medieval Barcelona Cathedral and might be a little difficult to find. While we were there it was very crowded, but the courtyard is small and only has one door to enter and exit. Admission to the temple is free and, as we found out later in our tour, there are several other Roman ruins in the Gothic Quarter.

We were brought here as part of our walking tour and visited twice on or own afterwards. It isn’t a tremendously big courtyard but it’s peaceful and allowed for a bit of quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. That ceiling too... beautiful.

Things are always a little fuzzy when going back to 304 AD but, going on faith and whatever records the Romans left behind, Diocletian ended the lives of a nine year old boy and his thirteen year old brother on religious grounds. Justus (the elder) and Pastor are believed to be the subject of this fountain's naming.

This is the second oldest fountain in Barcelona. In 1367 this fountain, in the Placa de Sant Just, sprung to life. The original three heads would have been the sources for the water. Today there are 2 spigots between the 3 heads. Up above is a single figure of what looks to be a young boy; suppositions are that this is a depiction of Saint Just(us). But, after 100 years, who can really say with any certainty?

In 1831, it had a minor face-lift/reconstruction. It still looks like it is original.

Still, it is a medieval treasure, so simple and free of formality and pomp. Amazing how the people of Barcelona can set up tables, chairs, and cafes around treasures like this that are 1,700+ years old. Seems like they should be under protective glass.

This is the remnants of a very old fountain along the Ramblas very near the Boqueria. Since we love the market we passed by here several times. It is an historic marker.

Ashiyana means home! Definitely that's how we felt during our 3 week teacher training. Amazing nature, beautiful views from our bedroom and 10 out of 10 yoga teachers. Thank you, Chris, Tobi and Charlotte for making it possible.
