I've visited lots of cathedrals around the world and I honestly believe that this ranks as the best I've ever seen.

Whilst I accept churches and cathedrals need to raise money to support their maintenance, part of me objects to having to pay to enter a place of worship. There is a fee to enter but this was well worth it, so much so I would have gladly paid more.

The interior is stunning and the cathedral vast. There is an audio guide you can download which is really well done and enhances the experience.

Beautifully restored, this is a special place where time stops. The visit is well organised and sends you back to late Middle Age. I was particularly impressed by the equilibrium between simplicity of the monks and the sophistication of the art exposed.

This is an enormous amazing place with royal tombs.
The oak floors are amazing as are the buildings and contents.
When we were there the guided tours were only in Spanish.

This was extraordinarily well done. It was easy as a non-Spanish speaker as there was signage in English. It was fascinating, informative, and even playful. I think a lot of different ages could get something out of it. I especially enjoyed the feature where you could superimpose the face of another hominid onto your own when you stood in front of a screen. Great value for money and super easy to find and walk to from the old city of Burgos.

One of twelve medieval gates into the city during the middle ages, the existing structure was built by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor during the 16th century. Designed to impress as well as control access, the gate is monumental. The central entrance is flanked by two massive round bastions. The facade of the gate is decorated with sculptures of Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, the founder of the city, Charles V, Jueces de Castilla, Laín Calvo, Nuño Rasura, El Cid and Fernán González. A worthy landmark.

This chapel is the Chapel of the Purification, but also known as the Chapel of the Constables from the tombs of the Constables of Castiles, Pedro Fernandez de Velasco and Mencia de Mendoza. It’s really difficult to explain just how magnificent this chapel is. The two tombs of the Constables immediately stand out in the centre of the chapel, their statues carved from marble with even the most minute of details beautifully carved into their funerary statue monuments. There are three altarpieces in the chapel. Although all are beautiful, the main altarpiece of the Presentation is by far the most spectacular. It’s a renaissance piece covered in gold, depicting scenes of the Presentation of the Child and the Purification of Mary.

The star-shaped openwork vault at the centre of the dome of the chapel is an absolute triumph of Gothic architecture. It’s a perfect blend of glass traceries and decorated keystones.

This is how the old wealth used to live in Burgos, and still a nice walk. A bit outside of the center (which is what they wanted) but still all of 10 minutes walking! 😂

This church is dedicated to Saint Nicolas of Bari, but better known to children around the world as Santa Claus. The church nave is small and dominated by the monumental altarpiece which is also dedicated to Saint Nicolas. It’s an elaborately decorated stone and plaster piece of Spanish Renaissance and Plateresque style. The altarpiece is monumental in scale, covering the entire wall of the front aisle. There are also a few other smaller chapels in the nave, one of which has a stunning Baroque altarpiece dedicated to St. Michael. The church also has a small museum with a beautiful collection of tapestries and sculptures. The only problem in the museum is that there is no English.

There is a small entrance fee, but it’s also part of Burgos Cathedral 4 monuments ticket. It’s well worth paying €1 more to visit this museum to see the altarpiece alone. Amazing church and altarpiece.

Visited this church because it’s part of Burgos Cathedral 4 monuments ticket for only an extra euro and I have to say, it’s money well spent. The church was originally integrated into the defensive walls of medieval Burgos and the exterior looks austere. The bland exterior belies the rich Gothic interior.

One of the interesting features of the church is the chapels decorated with plateresque altarpieces such as in Chapel of the Nativity of Mary, Chapel of Our Lady of Good Morning or San Gil and the Chapel of the Magi. Each with an altarpiece fully adorned with carvings

The Gothic high altar is outstanding with a baroque canopy and altarpiece, The roof of the high altar ends with a beautifully shaped fan vault with a dome at its centre forming the shape of a star.

Not the highest point, but a great viewing point part way up to Castillo de Burgos. From here, you can see most of Burgos Cathedral and its spires. There’s also a cafe, La Ciudadela, where you can stop off for a drink while enjoying the views.

it was here that Columbus met the Spanish Kings upon his return from the second trip to the Americas, I could not visit inside in my visit but just admiring it from the outside is well worth and admire the Cordon above the entrance.

This is a very pleasant place to take a stroll and connects with other walkways along the riverside. The only disappointing aspect was the amount of mindless graffiti that seemed to be everywhere - even on the stones of the lovely old stone bridge.

This museum is housed in the impressive Miranda palace and consists of several galleries of archaeology covering Roman and prehistoric times. There is plenty of information available (though sadly no guide book) and displays come from all over the province. Regrettably we did not have time to visit the art display, but as the museum is free for pensioners we can always return in the future.

A fortification has existed here since the days of the Roman Empire, although it’s believed a castle proper existed since the Medieval period. There is so much history connected to this castle. It stood during the Moorish conquest and the Reconquista. It served as a royal castle for the kings of Castile and prison for the enemies of the Castillian monarch. Sadly, it did not survive the French occupation when it was blown up by the French army as it evacuated the castle and city near the conclusion of the Peninsular War.

The French did such a thorough job of destroying the castle, it is little more than a ruin now. Still, I love history and enjoyed the hike up to the castle for both the view and to learn about the history.
