You’ll end up in beautiful surroundings with great views over Oviedo city. 100 metres away is another historical site, San Miguel de Lillo. Both buildings are pretty seen from the outside, but the top attraction is the walk up here and the views.
The following is a quote from Wikipedia:
“Iglesia de Santa María del Naranco is a pre-Romanesque Asturian building on the slope of Mount Naranco …. Ramiro I of Asturias ordered it to be built as a royal palace, part of a larger complex that also incorporated the nearby church of San Miguel de Lillo, 100 meters away. The palace was completed in 842 and had in part a religious function, being consecrated in 848.”Written December 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The audio tour (listen to it on your smart phone, so bring headphones) is available in English, and is one of the best we’ve heard, with interesting historical detail. We spent about 90 minutes on the tour, which is longer than we usually spend in cathedrals. Most of the signs are in both Spanish and English.Written April 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PipinotUdine33 contributionsIn this small zoo you can see animals at really close distance. I've never be so close to a lynx, nor an eagle!

By the late 20th century, the square had fallen into such disrepair, the entire square was demolished and rebuilt except for Casa Ramón on the Southwest park of the square. Today it’s a cute little square with a rectangular plan. Surrounding the square are colourfully painted houses and shops. The “La bella Lola” sculpture is in this square and is by far one of the best landmarks in Oviedo.Written January 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VadimMurmansk, Russia34,575 contributionsThe main motive for visiting mount Naranco on the slope of which Oviedo is located are two churches included in the UNESCO world heritage list. I lived in an IBIS at the foot of the mountain, so I walked to them. Both the still pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo are half way to the top. The ascent follows the route of the Vuelta Cycling race. By the way some are going on the bike. It's not easy, even Miguel Indurain, a five-time Tour de France winner, had problems here. But You don't have a lung volume of 8 liters like him. Sagrado Corazón de Jesús will be the reward of whoever made it. This monument was built in 1950 and has the same symbolism as Christ the Redeemer on mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. Looking at it from the bottom, I did not go further up after San Miguel de Lillo. By the way, I took the bus 2A back part of the route. I don't know if you can ride it to the top, but part of the way is for sure.Written April 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - macedonboyGlasgow, UK185,662 contributionsThis sculpture was created as a tribute to the cartoon character Mafalda, created by Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón 'Quino' and inaugurated by Quino himself in 2014. The sculpture is an oversized depiction of Mafalda in her trademark thoughtful pose. She is wearing a cute red dress, a lovely smile on her face and sitting on an equally large bench with her feet dangling as she is too small to reach the ground. Fun sculpture.Written January 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Lucinda07Alicante, Spain63 contributionsLovely place to have a walk around or a sit down. It had plenty of benches and shade but also sun if you wanted to sit in the sun. Just before you enter there are a few stalls with drinks, ice creams etc. I liked the duck pond.Written August 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DepontEurope153 contributionsThe fine-art museum contains excellent examples of Spanish art from 15th till 21 century. Probably the most notable fine art museum in Asturia and Cantabria. A few paintings from the "big names" (moderately interesting two portraits by Goya, more interesting series from El Greco and workshop, Melendez, very good Sorolla, Zuloaga, Piñole ) and many less known excellent artists. It is in 3 buildings, slightly non-trivial to navigate since the passage from the 2nd to the 3rd building (hosting old masters) is from the top floor of the 2nd building. Very friendly staff but mostly only Spanish-speaking. Note that they have a lunch break 14:00-16:00 on most days, but museum is gratis.Written August 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - fernando oSan Diego, CA95 contributionsUNESCO heritage site since 1998. This pre-Romanesque church is a must visit while in Oviedo. We were there early in the morning and we had a private tour by the local historian who was so proud of this magnificent building. If you love history you will love this site.Written October 4, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- macedonboyGlasgow, UK185,662 contributionsThe urban landscape of Oviedo is adorned by sculptural works, generally commemorative monuments dedicated to characters of special relevance and some of purely artistic indulgence. My personal favourite is La bella Lola in Plaza del Fontán as it embodies so many emotions in the figure and the setting. Honourable mention also goes to La Maternidad by Botero and one of at least three sculptures on the trail honouring motherhood. Estatua de Mafalda, Las Guisanderas and Esperanza Caminando evoke the halcyon days of childhood, while La Lechera, Vendedor de pescado, Pescadera and Vendedoras del Fontán evoke the days of yore when life was much harderWritten January 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
