- BradHong Kong, China180,438 contributionsThe Städel Museum is is one of the most important fine art collections in Germany. It is located off the mainpromenade on the south side of the River Main in Frankfurt and can be visited from 10am to 6pm (Tues to Sun) with extended opening hours until 9pm on Thursdays. The museum is closed on Mondays. Entry tickets can be purchased online at the museum website if you want to skip the queue at the ticketing desk. There is a museum shop, restaurant & cloakroom available.
Historically, the Städel Museum was founded in 1815 making it one of Germany's oldest. The original art collection were bequeathed by late banker and art patron, Johann Friedrich Städel. The museum building was constructed in 1878 in Renaissance architectural style. Since then it has been rebuilt after WWII bombings and expanded to create exhibition space and to house large scale contemporary installations.
We visited recently and found the Rembrandt's Amsterdam special exhibition to be very good. Two floors of exhibition space were used while presenting numerous works from the Rijks, Amsterdam City Museum, Städel and others to present a tale of Amsterdam's flourishing commerce, trade and societal life and development during the Golden Age. We spent just over an hour going through the exhibition, finding it very good for art lovers and history fans alike.
The Städel Museum houses an excellent permanent collection of work by European Old Masters dating back around Middle Ages. You will have opportunity to view works by Flemish, Dutch, France, Spanish, Italian and German giants across important historic art genres and there were many impressive works on display. Allow 60+ minutes to browse this part of the museum collection.
We also found the Modern Art collection within the museum to be very good. There is a nice range of works by 19th to early 20th century Masters including works of the Blue Riders as well as German representation such as Max Beckman and Otto Dix to go along with your expected names including Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Matisse, Renoir, Ernst, Munch, Delacroix, Rodin and likes.
There is also a floor dedicated to contemporary art of the 20th-century. Unfortunately after 3.5 hours of viewing we had run out of time and were unable to visit this section of the museum on this particular visit. Also, the famous rooftop of the museum was closed on the day we visited due to snowy conditions.
Overall, we were very impressed with the organisation and fine representation of works of the Städel Museum. It is not just a thorough collection but there are many fine works to be viewed as well. Makes for a very nice way to spend a few hours if you are an art lover visiting Frankfurt. We will gladly return next time in the city.Written January 10, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. From the lovely flower and butterfly house to the myriad pleasant and not-overly-manicured outdoor spaces to the unbelievable dahlias to the never-ending tropic greenhouses…not to mention the rose garden and palm house and it just keeps going. Plus as with other tourist sites in Frankfurt in our experience it was not empty but not crazy overcrowded even mid-summer. Very highly recommended!Written July 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Kai CHalf Moon Bay, CA1,367 contributionsOne of the best natural history museums I've seen, and I've been to many. The way the curators combine the feel of an old-style museum (taxidermic animals) with modern science, esthetics and education is without parallels. Dinosaurs are restored and placed in ways that give you a feel for their lives in the flesh. Aan enormous amount of information about, say, insects yet it is meticulously selected and presented, so you never feel crowded or overwhelmed. There is an entire reef there, you feel like you're diving in Queensland.Written October 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TuanDinhHanoi, Vietnam544 contributionsThe Römerberg is the town hall square in Frankfurt am Main and has been the centre of the old town since the High Middle Ages . The name comes from the Haus zum Römer , or Römer for short , which has served as the town hall since the 15th century.
Located roughly in the center of Frankfurt's old town, the square has been and continues to be the site of important events, like the imperial coronations of the early modern period, Frankfurt trade fairs, the Frankfurt Christmas markets or large social and political rallies.
The historic buildings on the Römerberg, including the Römer, the Ostzeile (consist of Zum Engel, Goldener Greif, Wilder Mann, Kleiner Dachsberg-Schlüssel, Großer Laubenberg and Kleiner Laubenberg), the Alt-Limpurg, the Löwenstein, the Samstagsberg, the Alte Nikolaikirche, the Old St. Nicholas Church and the Fountain of Justice, mostly constructed with styles of Gothic and Baroque, were largely destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt in 1944. The square's current appearance is the result of reconstructions that are true to the original and new buildings in the 1950s and 1980s.
Römerberg is beautiful all year round, but it truly comes alive during the Christmas season when it hosts one of Germany’s oldest Christmas markets. In case you aren't a fan of excited crowds, early mornings or late afternoons could be ideal, as usually less busy. Spring and fall offer mild weather and normally fewer tourists, making it a nice time to explore the square at your own lifestyle and pace
Whether you’re exploring the historical buildings, enjoying a meal at a local café or simply soaking in the atmosphere, a visit to Römerberg is sure to be a memorable experience.Written November 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Many others were doing the same, but it wasn’t at all congested.
There are several museums along the way.
