I had been looking forward to this visit since I didn't have time available on my previous trip to Hamburg. I enjoyed the first of the three exhibition buildings, but not so much the 2nd and 3rd.
The first building is a history of BallinStadt including the man, Ballin, and his vision for a city for those waiting to immigrate and the buildings and experience of the émigrés. This was quite interesting. The posted information is in German, but we used the audio guide in English. This mostly satisfied us although there were artifacts in building 2 that had no English explanations available.
The 2nd building was a general intro and consideration of immigration. I didn't particularly enjoy much of this. The material was appropriate for a late grade school or middle schooler, perhaps ages 11 - 13, who had not considered the what, whys, how's, and impacts of immigration through the centuries. Several exhibits tended to "preachiness" and political correctness that rather alienated me. Nonetheless, I applaud the museum for taking on the topic as extensively as it did, If I had been traveling with children, I would have discussed the issues with them.
I never figured out Building 3 - an exhibit of Sesame Street. I never watched it nor did my children.
Cafe was a nice spot to relax. The computer access to Ancestry was not working when I tried. Oh well. I have used it from my library at home. I appreciate that the museum makes the records available.
