This is the best area to see what East Berlin looked like before the wall came down. This is what the entire area looked like. Its drab and dreary but cool by today's standards.

Dark Matter Berlin offers a captivating series of immersive experiences that showcase kinetic light and soundscapes, pushing the limits of what's technically achievable. I highly recommend it.

I view private art collections as the ultimate thing to do in Berlin. This one is smaller than some others but the perfect tour. You have to reserve your spot well in advance, I was two weeks ahead to get a ticket. You have to know to walk into the courtyard and keep going or you might miss the entry. It IS private. The receptionist was very friendly and accommodating, the tour was a few people, just enough to allow dialogue around the artworks. There was some hands-on experience, there was plenty of interaction between the guide, the people and the artwork. There were great pieces by artists I studied in school decades ago, and some art from ones who I know are still making things today. One piece I remember from the cover of the art magazines of the early 80's, absolutely iconic piece. Great art. Great tour guide dedicated to bringing out the love of art, and an truly wonderfully low price.

If you're tired of galleries full of same old paintings and sculptures labeled as "modern", here you will find works that actually challenge the concept of art. Interactive, disconcerting, amusing - and some of them unlike anything you've seen before. The exhibitions aren't permanent, but I was very glad with what I've seen. A real gem for modern art lovers, and not just a tourist spot for those who want to tick it off their list.

Further to my review of yesterday (one can see that the effect of this gallery is not trivial) I should add that the bulk of the statues are missing their arms is perhaps significant. Now of course many many Khmer statues are armless, because time is particularly unkind to these, and the breaks are of course old (unlike those on the rear of the statues, which show where they were detached from their temple settings). But the fact of this mutilation fits well with the sadistic Araki photographs on the walls: the armlessness seems to equate with powerlessness, a quality shared with the bound women. Both the lovely statues and the lovely women have been reduced to chattels in Pawson's evocative space.

Your impression of this place will definitely depend on what the exhibit is on when you visit. Just by chance, the artist was giving a talk just as we arrived. It was very interesting and informative. If you have an interest in photography this place is a must see while in Berlin.

For fans of current contemporary art, a visit here is a must. But you really have to want to see what's being done right now, without the filter of time and taste. I came here during the 12th Berlin Bienniale, with three floors devoted to installations ranging from glass cases displaying diaries and old magazines to video clips to a huge display of terra cotta vaginas. Most of the works focused on actual or virtual violence toward women. I find the contemporary installations at the Hamburger Bahnhof, another Bienniale venue, more interesting, partly because they can be large and partly because they can be viewed in the context of such late 20th Century stars as Beuys.

If of course the felling of an exhibition space always depends on the exhibitions themselves, the Me Collectors Room can nevertheless pride itself of a great public space with restaurant and bookshop. The exhibition space is quite interesting as well, with no particular route when we visited it, which gives the visitor the feeling that the exhibition could have been different when seen the other way round, starting with the door you exited the expo.
We saw the expo based on the Obrist collection, which was just fascinating.

This former church has been repurposed into an art gallery. The space is beautiful, and fans of brutalist architecture will appreciate. It is free and you can visit it in a few minutes.
