Difficult but VERY important!! FREE Section of wall and original basement of SS building located here
Use a hop on hop off!! We utilized the ONE DAY Big Bus (#1) on trip advisor last year. You download an app and get real time location of buses on route!
The Pergamon is an excellent museum. I highly recommend booking a time slot; we arrived at 11am and there was quite a substantial queue already. We were able to skip it and got straight in. The exhibitions themselves are excellent; my only criticism is that most of the explanations are not translated to english. Plenty of places to sit for those who need it; the cafe is big and the food is tasty. The gift shop is also well worth a look.
I'd place this visit as top priority to all visitors of Berlin. You could easily devote a full day to absorbing the artwork, artifacts and amazing architecture that makes up the museums on this island. Bring a good pair of walking shoes, lots of energy, some water and perhaps a small lunch. Lots of unexpected surprises and breathtaking exhibits to admire. If you have time to visit more than one museum, there is a ticket available for €19 each to allow admission to multiple museums, please note booking visit times in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.
I spent at least a couple of hours in this museum and did find it fascinating, although be warned there is a huge amount to read. The story of Alexander the Great's conquest through Asia was really well presented with excellent maps, including a huge map in the centre of the exhibit. Moving on, the exhibit on ancient Egypt is huge and would be amazing for a huge Egyptian fan. It's not my favourite period of history but I will say that seeing all these few thousand year old artifacts does remind one of our place in history. I found the section on prehistory and the middle ages to be my favourite. I am pretty sure this was the museum with a really nice video of how mankind lived throughout the periods of the stone ages through to the iron age. It was excellently done. The only problem I have with these large museums is the amount of reading and leaving bags in lockers means no access to water unless you visit often pricy cafes. You have to book for museums on Berlin's museum island too so might be tough to do some over two days. It is a fascinating place to visit though. I'm glad I got into one of Berlin's big museums.
We went mainly for the aviation part but were surprised with all there was offered! Very cheap tickets for hours of fun knowledge. Definitely worth a visit!
This is a fun museum with loads of information and great interaction. I would agree it can be packed with school kids so if I went again I would go later in the day to avoid the kids. There was so much to see that you had to keep track of which bits you had done. Spent around an hour there. Worth a visit and can get a discount with the Berlin welcome card.
If you love art, if you love history, if you love old masters paintings this is a must do it . A lot of Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Durero, Botticelli, Rafael, Cranach, Hals, Christus, Caravaggio... The audio guide is one excellent.
Chilling the obsessive levels of surveillance that were utilised to control the DDR citizens - when you think that you have seen it all, it shows more in clinical detail - the rooms are a time warp
I was expecting to hate this as I was dragged along by my car-obsessed fiance, but I actually had a lovely time. He on the other hand lit up like a Christmas tree, so if you're a classic car fan, I think this is a great place to go.
The showroom is huge, there's a great array of cars, it is light and airy but has plenty of seating so you can go about at your own pace. We also had lunch in the onsite restaurant which was delicious.
There is a lot of history in Berlin and plenty of museums to visit.
We spent a happy 3 hours at the exhibition called basically “but what if…” It covered all of the major events that you would expect - world wars, Berlin war and back in time to 1850 - but didn’t just present the facts, it also made you think about what might have been. It was fascinating, thought provoking and well presented.
The final room had an interactive role-playing game set up on an iPad. You pick the person you want to play and work through different scenarios relating to the fall of the Berlin wall.
I strongly recommend this exhibition. It was interesting, educational and excellent value!
Lovely museum that is a similar experience to London's Natural History Museum but smaller. The models, that are many, are fantastic and the museum also shows an aspect of what is done on the background with regard to cataloguing the world's species. You can see the scanners they use to take 3D images of insects and pass through a room stocked floor to wall with thousands of species of fish in jars. When you consider that these are just the marine species it makes you realise just how many species are on this planet!
The dinosaurs will be the big draw for visitors but it's not the only display that is excellently done. I thought the interactive displays for the dinosaurs were fantastic. Kids will love the little eyeglass style things that you point at dinosaurs to see a video of them.
This is my favourite sort of museum and it is easily as good as the much bigger and probably better known London Natural History museum.
This exhibition is extremely well put together and highly thought provoking, there is a lot of reading in either German or English and many photographs.
Would highly recommend it to anyone who visits the city and wants to find out more about that era.
