What travelers are saying
- David NHawthorne, CA588 contributionsTake a moment to enjoy this fountain in front of the neues Rathaus during your visit to Marienplatz. The water is beautiful and you can appreciate the craftsmanship that was used to rebuild this fountain after being destroyed in World War II.Written December 16, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SilverOrlovTel Aviv, Israel1,815 contributionsIt was built to commemorate the construction of Munich's water supply system and named for the House of Wittelsbach, who ruled over Bavaria for more than seven centuries.Written September 14, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradJillHong Kong, China156,871 contributionsVisited Viktualienmarkt recently and enjoyed seeing the Karl Valentin Brunnen (fountain) near southwest end of the market. This fountain and statue is the work of Ernst Andreas Rauch in 1953.
What you see is a bronze gentleman in suit and hat, with 'real' flowers placed in his hands. Valentin stands on a fish hook like structure from which there are four small faces with water spouts which spill water into a small basin below. The hook like structure stands upon a round ball-shaped pedestal. The basin was full of water even during December during our recent visit.
In the end, this is a neat fountain and statue, as are the handful of other other small market fountains scattered around Viktualienmarkt which you can view while sightseeing around the market.Written December 4, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was built in 1904 by German sculptors sculptors Heinrich Düll and Georg Pezold.
Here you find a statue figure of a small young girl backed up against the side of a wolf. The girl and wolf seem to be peering at each other. The sculpture stands upon a pillar with modest Art Nouveau style ornamentation. At the base are four wolf heads from which water spouts into a basin below. There are elegant engravings around the basin as well.
Overall, this is a rather interesting fountain monument to see in Munich. Give it a few minutes if you are in the area and enjoy viewing fountains and other monuments during your travels.Written June 22, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was created in 1964 by the Munich sculptor Josef Henselmann.
Henselmann created a terraced fountain. Above the steps, the fountain is crowned by a bulky bronze group of three cattle. The stone figure of a watchful shepherd sits a little apart.Written November 1, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You will most likely pass it if you head towards Marienplatz from Karlsplatz.
The two different coloured statues make it look interesting and it does have a bit of water below.Written April 6, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. At the top of the fountain column seating on a plinth supported by four fishes is a cute little girl carrying a rattan basket with a big wolf like animal. Above the fountain basin at the bottom is four wolf head water spouts. If the name is correct, the fountain could have been something from a fairytale. It is designed in 1904 by Von Heinrich Dull and Georg Pezold (the same architects who designed the Friedensengel (Angel of Peace). It is an interesting piece of work and you will see it if you happen to be near Holbrauhaus.Written May 10, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jens LWatford, UK797 contributionsI had some time to walk around trying to get as much in as possible in three hours, so starting with MarienPlatz, I branched out and came of AugustinerPlatz where the church is the main feature. This particular fountain is special in itself, though, due to the design and the way that it somehow gives the square a separate presence.Written July 20, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,280 contributionsThis is one of a number of quirky statues dotted around the Viktualienmarkt. Ida Schumacher was a comedienne and actress, with a trademark husky voice, shown here in one of her most famous roles as the lady who cleans the tram tracks.Written July 30, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mikael FHelsinki, Finland30,539 contributionsFortunabrunnen is a beautifully decorated fountain situated at Isartorplatz just across the street from the Isartor City Gate.
The fountain was completed in 1907. On the top, you can see the bronze figure of the goddess Fortuna.Written November 3, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is beautiful, especially with the palace behind. Because the audio tour had ended I did not get the detail on the fountain but it was pleasant to see.Written July 16, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradJillHong Kong, China156,871 contributionsEnjoyed visiting Viktualienmarkt recently, seeing the various small fountains including this one dedicated to 20th-century German actress, Elise Aulinger. This fountain and statue is the work of Toni Rueckel (1977).
What you will see is an elderly Aulinger, seated with an open book in her right hand while she raises her left arm and hand as if addressing a small audience. The statue rests upon a simple base with a three pronged spout spilling water into a small basin below.Written December 10, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mikael FHelsinki, Finland30,539 contributionsThis fountain is located in the Old Botanical Gardens. It was completed in 1937.
On our visit, the sculpture had been unfortunately covered because of construction work.
From the pics, the fountain looks quite stunning. A muscular Neptune stands in the middle of the fountain.Written October 24, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was revealed on September 19, 1971.
The artist has created a lovely bronze sculpture. With her right hand, she touches the turtle, from whose mouth the water shoots out.Written November 1, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
