Our guide did a great job of explaining the Popes and life at the palace. Very glad we had a guide. I think we got a lot more out of the visit.

Definitely worth a visit but early if weather suitable. Much more peaceful. Great views. And free! Recommend going here and then doing palais of the papes

The food options here are amazing. It was a fun place to walk around, lots of choices to eat and fun to shop for later.

There,s not actually much to see on the bridge (two chapels, one of which is down a flight of stairs) and the view from the river path isn't much different. I don't actually know how much it costs because we were in a group, but really the best view was from the riverbank - oh and the disabled lift wasn't working - if you don't do stairs, check before you pay that it is back up and working

A spacious palace on Rue Vernet, with an eclectic mix of imitation Roman statues, impressionist paintings (including a nice Sisley), an Egyptian collection )sarcophagi, papyruses, ushabti figurines, pickled animal organs in jars). The main part is the collection of huge classicist tableaus which are well worth seeing - depicting a world that never was but which all Europeans secretly yearn for). The museum is not a must, unless you care about art.

The story behind the paintings in this museum's collection is incredible-and soap opera level dramatic. Basically, it involves a 19th century Roman art collector, his crimes of embezzlement, Napoleon III, and the Louvre's high-mindedness. Admission is free, and we spent an engrossing hour and a half. The courtyard cafe is egregiously overpriced.

Great way to view Avignon and the Palais des Papes. Unfortunately the shuttle boat was out of commission so I had to walk across the bridge from Avignon but it wasn’t a huge ordeal especially if you visit Pont d’Avignon before or after. There is a small cafe on the island for a refreshing drink and a view

A beautiful, perhaps a bit understated, 14-15th century basilica in the old town. The side chapels seem to have original (unrestored) paintings that I liked a lot. Beautiful sculpture of Virgin Mary.

We hailed a free Baladine (milk float/Popemobile like bus for 6) which took us here as it was the other side of town from the main tourist attractions as we had already walked miles. This ancient street winds with huge plane trees breaking up the ancient stone walk, along a river with waterwheels or skeletons of them, right along where they used to tan leather. There are charming wonky houses all along and little bridges across to various chapels and a synagogue. When we were there, we were charmed by the church-like silence, the welcome shade and the interesting carved stones and benches along the way. It's not long but it's an oasis of peace in a tourist mecca. Don't tell anyone.

Cool place to rest tired feet during a heat wave in August. Free to enter, very interesting interior. See the palace, then the cathedral, and end with a wa
