The tapestry is so much longer than you'd imagine. You have to see it in person to truly appreciate how long it is. The viking longboat is pretty cool too!

On our D-Day sightseeing tour, we stayed in Bayeux for a few days. Bayeux turned out to be a small and charming town and was our absolute favorite place in Normandy.
Not only did we love the beautiful cathedral, but also the expansive picturesque pedestrian streets with charming restaurants and stores. In daytime, Bayeux is visited by many day tourists, in the evening you have the place for yourself. A restaurant reservation is still absolutely essential, we had trouble getting a free table without a reservation.

We visited the cemetery straight after the Normandy museum - it's only a couple of hundred metres up the road and visiting the museum first really added to the poignancy of the visit.

Being able to walk amongst the graves, read the names, ages and messages of the men and boys was really powerful and history that both adults and children can't learn from books.

Seeing our British soldiers alongside young German soldiers as well as Polish and Canadian soldiers was really thought provoking and we had tears in our eyes.

The cemetery is kept immaculately, was peaceful and was a highlight of our D Day tour of Normandy.

Good overview of the entire D-Day with no focus on any particular action. The tour is chronological and well structured. One drawback is that you have to read a lot, there is no audio guide.
The museum has many original preserved war materials. A visit is worthwhile if you have already seen the most important museums on D-Day, such as the Airbone or the Overlord Museum, and are also in Bayeux.

A nice collection. Especially the earlier exhibits.

The English text was quite small though and I struggled to read it at times. So I suggest bringing your glasses

Despite numerous previous visits to Bayeux we hadnt visit this before.

Stunning and just a short leisurely walk to the parc

Beautifully quiet but well frequented by walkers and families.

    Forna and flora were amazing

Huge ancient tree which was cleverly supported by a maze of wires hidden in the leaves

Bright colours and well cared for

This memorial was a little hard to find as it wasn't accurately marked on the online maps. On a rainy day it was quite shadowy with a thick cover of trees. The simple steles were very moving.

An amazing day. Francois is very knowledgeable and courteous. He took us through the American sector. I learned quite a bit. Overall a moving experience.

This is the church where an American paratrooper got stuck on the steeple. Great story of his escape from the Germans.

This is one of those 'must visit' places which you actually do not want to visit. I knew the black history of this war crime site and I wasn't all too keen on go there.

And, once again (like Dachau and Le Paradis) I shook my head in disbelief. The systematic butchery of P.O.W.s by the SS never ceases to amaze or fill me with sorrow. And anger?

My hairs stood on end walking around that little area. What went through the heads of those poor, young & frightened Canadian soldiers, knowing that a bullet awaited them on the other side of the wal? And, don't forget this little "twist", the main building was an Abbey!!

I've read Hubert Meyer's 12th SS several times but he blames the PTSD hardened SS troopers, with Russia as their excuse, and not the whole SS machine. Don't forget, the Le Paradis 'affair' of the Norfolks occured in 1940, when Russia & Nazi Germany were allies...

To compound matters, the suspects, in the main, got clean away with it....

Great cider tasting with friendly staff. We just turned up and felt very welcome. My husband tried a variety of ciders, I was offered to have some Apple juice as I was driving.
We ended up buying a box of cider and some juice. After getting home we wished we had bought more!

Bayeux has a beautiful center with old houses, beautiful museums, good restaurants and in the immediate vicinity there is so much more to see and do, which makes Bayeux a perfect base.
