This was my third visit to Oradour-sur-Glane. I was working near Limoges so took the opportunity to pay my respects and also share the experience with my girlfriend who hadn't heard of this tragedy. I was able to respectfully point out the locations of the barns in which the men of the village were murdered and most of the shops, cafes and hotels. The church really is the pinnacle of the evil that day as you can imagine the scared children and women being lead into the church.
I've always wanted to gain a more understanding of life and the people, in the lead up to June 1944 and I have found the book Silent Village by Robert Pike a really useful way of learning about the residents and life in the area, so that I can remember the victims rather than the inhumanity that they met on that disastrous day.

The museum presents the evolution of porcelain manufacturers by highlighting various pieces produced in Limoges over the centuries. It was important that we took a guided tour in English as we would have had no clue how to interpret or even make our way through the large displays. True highlight of our stay in Limoges and highly recommended.

The Gare Benedictins in Limoges is a really impressive building and well worth a closer look if you get the chance.
The interior of the station is well organised and has a small shop, a ticket office and an air conditioned room with access to Wi-Fi and charging points. There are also other places to sit within the railway station.
This station is well organised and very clean.
If you have any time to spare before catching your train then it is a nice environment to wait.
There are plenty of taxis dropping off and picking up right outside the station. It’s about a €30 fare in a taxi to the nearby Limoges airport

Love a cathedral and this has all the great architecture and stained glass you’d expect. Nice place for some peace and to take it all in.

There are such hidden treasures in the center of France and this is a gem like no other .
From the initial warm welcome to the well versed historical storytelling you are guaranteed to step back in time and embrace the beautiful pastoral backdrop . My family cannot stop talking about it and by far this has been the best tour I have experienced throughout my travels in France!

Beautiful gardens next to the cathedral. Nice place to spend some time wandering through it all and then walk down to the river.

I have studied a lot of the history of the 20th century in Europe and visited many places connected with key events, but no history is told as well as those places where everything has been left as it was - just as it is in Oradour. There are so many things to see here that show what the village was like in 1944 - the Singer sowing machines in the houses; the weighing scales in the baker's shop, the rusting cars, the schools, the cafes, the tram lines - you can see the people living their lives there up to the moment that the atrocity happened.
In the Visitor Centre, we bought a pamphlet called "The Tragedy Hour by Hour" by Robert Hebras - one of the few survivors of the massacre and we used it as a guide during our visit. It told the story of what happened and how it happened in sufficient detail to understand how events unfolded that day. When we were leaving, we passed two walls which carry photographs of many of those whose lives were cut short that day. No human being could look at the people in those photos and not feel emotional and ask how could such things happen - and feel a determination that they should never happen again.
Anyone who visits Oradour and is not appalled at what humans can do to each other has not learned from the experience.

Sunday morning visit to this old slate Quarry with history. A nice tour lasting just over an hour, probably a struggle for the less agile as there is a large staircase to descend and a good climb on a slope to finish. Overall very enjoyable.

My husband was particularly taken with the engineering/construction side of these towers. Fabulous ruins to walk round, probably quite difficult for those with limited mobility as lots of steep, slippery stones. Nestled in the trees, was very interesting

A great little distillery in Brive. Lovely to taste all the drinks on offer and to see how the drinks have been made through the ages.
Parking is not ideal but the town of Brive has plenty of slots to take most size vehicles.

We’ve been to huge aquariums in major capitals around the world so was expecting this might be a little underwhelming. In fact, we loved it! The tanks are super clean and everything looks well looked after. So many interesting fish and sea creatures, including varieties we’ve never seen before.
The staff man walking around was super friendly and welcoming, and pointed out some baby fish that had been born that morning, which my 2.5 year old loved to see.
My only negative would be that although another reviewer said exhibits had English translations, I didn’t see any, only French, but perhaps I was too engrossed in looking at the fish!
