- Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands6,754 contributionsHoly Cross cathedral was finally consecrated in 1829 more than 600 years after they started building it. The colossal neo-classical building (140m long, 50m wide, spire 106m high) dominates the center of Orléans and can be seen from far away. For me it was difficult to discern the different sections and link them to the time they were constructed. I liked the interior with gothic style arches and light through the beautiful stained glass windows.
The church is well-maintained and clean.
Free entry (it is still a house of God welcoming guests both rich and poor).Written November 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Renaissance style building stands out because of the colours and brick patterns.
Perhaps more important than the list of royal visitors, is the fact the mansion was a center of Protestant rebellion during the end of the 1500s. Jérôme Groslot (son of the mansion founder) was killed during the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre.
The building served as town hall of Orléans for a long period of time until 1981. The interior dates from the mid 1850s.

There were hardly any other visitors on the Saturday we visited, by taking the tram from the town centre (1.80 Euros paid by tapping your credit card on the payment terminal on the tram, but not at the entrance to the tram which is for pre-paid tram cards) to the park and walking through a University area following the signage to the park. Only facilities were at a small food truck as the shop and all other facilities other than lavatories were closed.Written October 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jackie_lonsdaleReading, UK215 contributionsGreat and safe track. We cycled from Orleans to Meung-sur-Loire which is about 15 miles. The path is (mostly) well marked and very smooth. It would be a good family trip. Along the route (close to Meung) is a very pretty (English style) garden called Les Jardins de Roquelin which is a nice stop. You can buy coffee / tea / cold drinks there. We then caught a train back to Orleans. Note! From April to October you need to book your bicycle place on trains at weekends and public holidays. This must be done on line and cost €1 per bike.Written May 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands6,754 contributionsThe history of the city goes back to the times the Roman empire dominated the continent. Roman emperor Aurelianus gave his name to the city. After the struggle between different warlords during the early middle ages, most of what had been built, was destroyed. Only after 1429 when Joan of Arc was involved in a decisive battle the situation gradually started to stabilize. During subsequent centuries, the historic center of Orléans developed.
Considering Orléans has just under 120,000 inhabitants, the size of the historic centre-ville is quite large (roughly 2 km up from the Loire river and 2 km wide). Of course the area near Martroi square and the magnificent cathedral is quite spectacular, but I liked the eastern part more as it is more peaceful and quiet with many students from the nearby university.Written November 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Eyecatchers such as the statue of Joan of Arc and the carousel are not the only sights. Personally I liked de Rotunda building, but there many more. The main tourist office is also on the square.Written November 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Géraud B12 contributionsSuch a nice family friendly place. Grab a beer at the bar (options are limited but the beer is good, and some is locally brewed), and seat at one of the wooden table facing the Loire. We stayed for about an hour enjoying the bird show, then grabbed a few more ! Lovely place to have a drink by the river.Written August 11, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- GranZorroZug, Switzerland1,554 contributionsEven for people with knowledge of the Holocaust, the fact that the Vichy regime and the German Nazi occupiers first transported apprehended Jews into three French-run concentration/holding camps in the Loiret area (before sending them to the gas chambers) is pretty much unknown.
With special emphasis on the thousands of murdered Jewish children, this memorial site manages to painstakingly collect pictures and biographical data highlighting individuals and their fate.
This site deserves more publicity and many more visitors.Written September 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were late in the season to catch the best displays but it is well maintained and a pleasant place to sit. At the far entrance is a good modern landscaped area outside the park which clearlt draws from its influence and adds to the ambience for locals.Written October 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
