There is a tourist trail that takes you to all the relevant parts of this really old town - you follow the triangles set in the pavement. We didn’t have much time but will certainly be returning- what a town!

Easy to locate being built on top of a hill. This is a wonderful example of a classic Gothic Cathedral. Beautiful carvings on the front entrance but even more beautiful stained glass windows inside. The crypt and treasury are also worth visiting.
There is parking in front of the Cathedral but there is no free parking anywhere in the centre of Auxerre.

We dropped in to Les Caves on our way down the canal. It was a welcome relief from the sweltering heat and certainly a novelty. We found the tasting a little perfunctory and not exactly engaging; and somewhat cynically it seemed that every recommendation was for the most expensive on the list. Which may be true of course but combined with a bit of an attitude left us wondering if it was all a little commission driven.

Still, well worth a stop even if you skip the tour and don’t buy anything.

It's situated in the Old Town of Auxerre and we walked past it by chance. It's nice to look at and worth visiting only when you're nearby anyway.

Well worth a visit as part of a longer trip to Auxerre. Good selection of artifacts within the museum here.

Very informative visit about life in the region in times gone past. We enjoyed the art exhibit depicting the ville many years before.

The lady helping us was just fantastic.
She went way beyond what was necessary to make sure that we had all the information needed and then some 🙂

The markets have a great variety food on display, very enjoyable just walking around.
Stock up your fridge with the fresh produce.

Compared with the Abbey and Cathedral this is a relatively small church, located only a few minutes walk from the town center. The entrance isn't where you would expect it, it seems to be at the back of the church. Once inside it's the brightness and the wonderful stained glass windows that catch the eye. They really are magnificent, well worth a visit.

Looks better on the outside. Inside is somewhat boring. There are enough other churches in Auxerre to see.

One of our first visits in Auxerre as it was only a hundred meters or so from where we were staying. Another museum in Auxerre that is only open in the afternoon but is free entry. The first room on the ground floor is exquisitely furnished with antiques. The next three floors are filled with cabinets of local ceramics which interest us but maybe not everyone. On the top floor the roofing is visible and is an amazing array of timber beams. There isn't a lift for the handicapped or people with mobility problems.

Small but interesting museum located beside the Town Hall. It is only open in the afternoons during the week and guided tours are every hour from 2pm.
Our guide was very interesting and obviously knew the the items in the museum intimately. The guide has a little English. The publicity gives the impression that the museum is essentially based on Napoleonic items. In actual fact almost all the items are related to Marechal and his wife from the early Napoleonic period. Still worth a visit though.
