What travelers are saying
- AugustoLa Plata, Argentina484 contributionsSaint-Malo is a beautiful town in and on itself. The ramparts surrounding the entire town and overlooking the sea are just gorgeous. The entire walk should take you about an hour.
Keep in mind that it can get pretty windy.Written March 19, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I would highly recommend visiting and especially visiting the beach - an amazing long clean beach with good access and plenty of amenities . One of the top 5 beaches I have visited around the worldWritten June 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Margaret WFife, Scotland215 contributionsProbably not the best aquarium we've been to but nonetheless we enjoyed our visit. Going underwater in the nautibus was fun and something we hadn't experienced before.Written October 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Allison G2 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit, but probably even better when the museum is open. St Malo on the whole is really nice and am planning a return trip for an even better look around.Written December 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA19,451 contributionsThis is the largest church in town, so we had to step inside. It is a classic French church, rebuilt after the WWII bombing, and the reconstruction preserves the old school design. It was quiet and dark on our visit.Written February 15, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Thomas VOakland, CA19,451 contributionsThis is one of the forts that you see on the islands outside of the old city. We observed it from the city walls where there is an unobstructed view. These are the ruins of an old fort.Written February 16, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Humanitarian_GourmetGeneva, Switzerland35 contributionsBeing from Québec, I had interest in visiting the museum while my expectation was not very high. However, the museum was among my kids favorite in the region. The day we visited, they had ancient toys and workshop on tying knots. The house has a old maps that were very interesting. We also learned about the history of the discovery. We actually stayed for three hours beyond our expectations. Bravo to the team.Written September 14, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Christopher KSimi Valley, CA187 contributionsWe spent 4 nights at this wonderful luxury hotel mid-may 2024. There are a lot of hotels in St. Malo to choose from but we wanted to stay intra-muros to get the experience of staying inside a walled city. Le Grand Be has a spa, restaurant, bar, and paid guest parking, and the price was very reasonable for this caliber of hotel. We chose the Suite because, along with a separate sitting room, there is also a private balcony with 2 seats and a table, which came in handy when it was time for cocktails. From the balcony, there is a view of Le Grand Be island. The rooms were nice, bright and airy, with A/C, 2 TVs, and a coffee maker and electric teapot. The WC is separate from the bathroom, and the bathtub is French-style, with a handheld shower but no wall attachment. In other words, to bathe, you sit in the bathtub and grab the handheld shower to rinse. We actually went to the spa for 2 days to use the sauna and relax, so we showered down there in their large showers.
Breakfast was delicious, typical of French hotel breakfast buffets, with several specialty galettes and pastries from Bretagne. The bar has an extensive cocktail, wine, beer, aperitif, digestif, and drink menu, and there are also several delicious mocktails that we tried. We didn't have the chance to eat in the hotel restaurant for lunch or dinner.
The location of Le Grand Be can't be beat. It is only a 10-minute walk (5 if you walk as fast as we do) to Porte Saint-Vincent, where you can find a lot of restaurants, bakeries, food stores, and shops. From there, you can take pretty much any street that branches off and find more restaurants, bars, shops, sandwich shops, bakeries, ice cream stands, patisseries, etc etc. Make sure you try a Kouign-Amman when you are in Bretagne. The entrance to the ramparts is a 2-minute walk from the hotel, from which you can walk around the city and get astounding views of the islands and Channel. You can also access the beach and walk to the Fort du Petit Be, island of Grand Be, and Fort National during low tide. Seeing the difference between high and low tide is impressive.
To get to the hotel, you enter via the Porte St-Louis, not the Porte St-Vincent as some sites indicate. All of the streets are one-way with a sea of humanity walking in front of you and not paying attention, so it takes some patience to drive inside the walls. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to the St Malo Aquarium, 50 minutes to Mont St Michel, and 25 minutes to drive to the oyster capital of Europe, Cancale. We highly recommend going to all 3.
The next time we are in St Malo, we wouldn't hesitate to stay at Le Grand Be again. We loved the hotel, and our visit to St Malo!
Tip: There are at least 25 French TV stations, but curiously nothing in English, which is perfect if you want to immerse yourself in French. You can stream on YouTube if you must have English TV.Written June 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA19,451 contributionsIt's a nice seaside spot to view the walls of the old city and some of the forts on the islands out at sea. It is a rocky coast, not a great place for swimming. And we were here during cold weather, so not many people around.Written February 17, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JuliiaFraKharkiv, Ukraine445 contributionsThis is a great place to visit with the guided tour or alone: these stones are speaking for themselves. One of the most tragic battles on the Atlantic wall took place here, in Bretagne. You can still see remains of fortification and bunkers (unbelievably thick walls!!) and weapons, damaged by artillery. The tours are worth visiting but unfortunately only available in French.
However, it is also a nice park with a view of the port and the city center, so do not forget to put it on your list!Written July 20, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It sits in the bay and was once an important part of the town's defenses against attacks. Now it is a tourist attraction and looks great at night when the floodlights are on. During the day it looks like an old fort that has seen better days.Written February 17, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
