Shetland Museum and Archives Lerwick
#1 of 6 Museums in Mainland
In so many museums you get tired before you get all the way round, but here you can take your time and and thoroughly enjoy everything from Shetland's past that has contributed to its present.
It is one of the most interesting museums I have ever visited, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
1 Way to experience it
Croft House Museum Lerwick
#2 of 6 Museums in Mainland
I definitely recommend a visit to the Croft House Museum to understand and experience a part of Shetland's history and a way of life.
(his heavy accent was a treat) We learned quite a bit from him and the museum and you must make sure you take the time to walk down towards the watermill and take in the view down by the shore.
Scalloway Museum Scalloway
#3 of 6 Museums in Mainland
This is a light airy modern clean building with marvellous displays and one of the best small museums we have been to anywhere in the world.
So many museums overwhelm with too many exhibits and a number underwhelm with very familiar types of exhibit.
Tangwick Haa Museum Brae
#4 of 6 Museums in Mainland
One of the best community-run museums in Scotland
I discovered a gem of a museum with an eclectic collection of items from the island, but my main joy was in talking to the custodian, whose friendliness and knowledge made the visit very memorable.
Shetland Textile Museum Lerwick

The Shetland Textile Museum is a bit away from the main area but once there it is well worth a visit. The museum has lots of interesting and historic displays with knowledgeable staff who were able to answer questi...
The Textile Museum is located in the historic Anderson home in a scenic spot by the water and a field of sheep.
Quendale Water Mill Sumburgh
#6 of 6 Museums in Mainland
This visit was planned to be in "peak tourism season" and we were pleasantly surprised with the museum.
Great local museum
