The man who owned this shop, Billy Day, had been a great friend of mine going back to 1997 when I was working in Edinburgh as an IT expat helping to prevent the Y2K disaster. I moved back to the US in 1999, but everytime I visited Scotland I would always stop in and spend some time in the shop and usually at a pub. Years would sometimes pass between visits, and I would usually drop in unannounced, and each time he would light up and we would pick up wherever we left off, and usually he would shutter the shop and we would go off to a pub. Gruff, short, indifferent, all of the reviews mentioning Billy's demeanor are probably true. He either liked you, or he didn't. The last time I saw him was in 2018 during a visit. Of course he had aged, we all do, but at some point for all of us it seems to accelerate. I was supposed to visit in 2020, but Covid put an end to that trip. Wanting to check in on Billy, I rang his mobile, and his shop phone. Both had been disconnected. Fearing the worst, when I visited in Sept 21, I sadly found that his shop was a womens accessory store. It had been Bacchus Antiques for over 30 years. I did some sleuthing in Edinburgh and discovered through another Antique merchant that he had passed away. No details, but allegedly not Covid related. I've tried to reach his sons, but no luck. I believe their names are Stephen Day and Michael Day, and they live in London. I'm actually not sure, but he frequently mentioned them and if my memory serves me correctly...... I am posting this here in hopes that someone has more information and could pass it on. The Old Town and Grassmarket used to be full of antique dealers. The last one has gone. Please reach out if you know anything. The usual social media channels will work. Brad Ivy in Kansas City.
