No trip to Edinburgh is complete without ascending the 350-million-year-old Arthur's Seat - and although the climb is hard work even for those of reasonable fitness, the views from the top make it well worthwhile.

Choose your day carefully, though. Heat, rain or cloud can all diminish your enjoyment to varying degrees, so aim for a cool, clear day to make the most of your climb. You won't be disappointed!

As long as you are reasonably fit, it's well worth slogging up the steep walkway. Great broad views of Edinburgh from different sides of the hill. Some interesting old monuments and buildings (including City Observatory) at the top of the peak as well. May have been the result of volcanic activities 340+ million years ago but feels pretty safe now. It's really enjoyable taking look at all the old buildings, viewpoints, Roman structures and monuments while at the top. And rug up, it's a bit cool and windy at times.

Beautiful place for a walk. Pretty close to the city center, but not overcrowded with turists. Perfectly maintained, a lot of space for children.

Beautiful greenery everywhere, ancient tombstones galore too. Great to walk through when crossing between old town and new. Offers fantastic views of Edinburgh Castle.

Beautiful sunny day for a walk with the Alpacas (Praline and Petros). Bob and Cat were really friendly and welcoming. Took you through the dos and don’t while walking the alpacas. Loved hearing about their individual personalities. You could see the separate paddocks for the males, mummies and babies (Cria) and Yearlings - they are well taken care of and spoiled for space to roam around freely. There are a few expectant Mums so more new additions to the family are due any time now. The walk lasted for around 90 mins and you then went back to feed the alpacas their dinner. The experience was really informative, Bob and Cat wanted you to ask lots of questions. The Alpacas were well behaved when cyclists, other walkers and dogs were around. It was a family friendly experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again later in the year when it’s cooler and less flies around - the alpacas didn’t like the flies very much or the heat.

Very well laid out and a most enjoyable day out. Great for all ages.
We used to visit over a decade ago and they have clearly made some substantial improvements since then. Two issues they need to address: too many ponds / pools are standing stagnant water which should be upgraded to continuous flowing irrigation; and the public toilets are in desperate need of an upgrade.

We loved our visit to the Pentlands! We actually ended up using the Pentlands bike hire service - Pentland Cycle Hire. It was great fun and we were able to explore the Pentlands a lot more than we would have if we were walking. I would highly recommend.

What a surprise ! We were lucky to visit on a hot weekend so saw the beach busy with families, young adults and children alike. It was not so busy you couldn’t feel relaxed and there are many places for food to sit on the promenade or takeaway. There was very little litter and what was had been cleaned up by the next day. There was a small but good arcade / ice cream stand etc etc but none of the kiss me quick feel. The beach at night remained quite busy with groups around fire pits etc and whilst people were drinking the atmosphere still felt welcoming rather than intimidating as some places can. The town itself has a bit of a run down feel BUT there are great places if you look - a couple of nice craft beer places, the Forresters Guild serving higher end food (has a French bistro feel) excellent fish and chips you can eat in or out at Andrew’s and the wonderful Portobello Books. There is also a very good bus service into city and further afield and the buses were cheap snd clean so no need for taxi’s. Overall I would definately recommend the beach and town as a place to visit or act as a summer base.

Castle Rock is visible from large parts of the city. The Castle on top is of course the interesting part, and when you are on castle rock you can't really enjoy it.. There are lots of tourists on top of it.

Our Edinburgh tour guide brought us here as our first stop and wow, what a treasure! This place is a quiet oasis in the busy zone that is Edinburgh. The garden is literally a "secret garden" like the stories of old, featuring incredible beauty and wildlife, especially birds. Take your time here and ENJOY all the natural beauty.

Went here on the weekend and had a lovely time. The children ran about the place and we were able to have a coffee. The children enjoyed it but I am knocking off a point as we had to pay as adults but there isnt much to do as an adult and I feel this would penalize smaller families or those visiting with the inlaws. Yes there are walks outside but that's outside so you are paying for the pleasure of looking after your children.

Nice open park space on the south of the city centre. Could walk to the Royal Mile in about 25 minutes and not far from the Commonwealth pool either. Big student population in this area. During the festival very busy. Tennis courts and other activities available.

This was a surprising hidden gem near Bruntsfield. Once you go up Blackford Hill, which has great views of the city, Pentlands & Arthur’s seat, you can walk over to Hermitage Braid which allows you to enjoy the lovely stream and songs of the birds. Very peaceful and quiet.
