What travelers are saying
- MamaSpesh5 contributionsMy Mum treated me to a Costume Tour of the RSC yesterday. I love anything theatre related and have always enjoyed costume design in stage and film productions.
After a lovely lunch at the Rooftop bar where we had lovely food and excellent, attentive service we embarked on our tour.
We were shepherded by the lovely David Stevens. A passionate, knowledgeable guide who clearly loved his job (although we were treading in the footsteps of great actors and so this could all have been a guise!). David made the tour not just about the costumes, but he shared his personal stories, historical facts and nuggets that just added to the experience. We really appreciated his time and his enthusiasm for what he showed us. It was a privilege to be shown the working environment of those behind the scenes who make the RSC productions come to life.
I could have spent so much more time, it if was afforded, just walking through all the costumes for hire. It felt like TK Maxx throughout the centuries - too much beauty to look at all on one hanging rail!
Every member of staff we encountered as part of our tour acknowledged us positively and this was appreciated too. They must feel like they are in a goldfish bowl at times but I wanted to say how much we appreciated their input. Including the two ladies at the end of our tour, one of whom commented on the Country Dancing that my Mum had done as a child, as had she, and the lady who was laughing at the fun Mum and I had using one of the interactive experiences.
I would recommend this tour wholeheartedly. If you are a theatre buff, if you like costumes or clothing (and just to be clear - David let us know the difference between clothing and costume, which I loved) through the ages or if you would like to just feel like you are in the presence of immense British theatrical history and greatness. This is a venue that has it all. The fact that you are awarded a guide with such a passion too is just a bonus. At no point were we made to feel rushed which is also a great aspect of a tour, even when the time has been outlined beforehand.
We will definitely return. Thank you.Written February 4, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was interesting to see the house as it was and it is well maintained. It is a bit of a tourist trap with people everywhere. There are guides in certain rooms giving more information if you want it.Written January 13, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NKayNorth East England, UK1,939 contributionsWe visited between Christmas and new year. It was quiet with only a couple of other visitors.
We loved the house. So much history within the building and well maintained.
Cheap parking a short walk from the house (2/3 minute walk)

Well everyone loved this show! It was the Sleeping Beauty performance and it was hilarious and done brilliantly.Written January 5, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So many different machines- the cinema was astounding. The humour and fun in the art was entertaining. Even the toilets had art. Really worth a visit for anyone who enjoys art or mechanics or fun.Written February 5, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chelsea BMilton Keynes, UK2,022 contributionsIt does get very busy, which can be difficult, especially when you have a young baby in your arms, like I did. - Debbie W2 contributionsI visited Shakespeare's Birthplace earlier on in the day and nearly overlooked this venue. I'm glad I didn't because it exceeded my expectations - mainly because the guides were so good at explaining everything. - K VBruton, UK325 contributionsBeautiful Stratford-upon-Avon is home to the Royal Shakespeare Company and all things William including his final resting place .
The Holy Trinity Church is a truly beautiful church with wonderful history and so much of interest to discover and seek out.
The highlight though is inevitably the tomb of William Shakespeare and his family.
Aside from some issues around parking the car and being uncomfortable about the charging of people to see the tomb and indeed the main part of the church it remains very much worth a visit if you are in Stratford and interested in Shakespeare.Written October 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. No visit to Stratford is complete without a walk along the riverbank. You can go as far as you like and we explored both sides. Some lovely wildlife to photograph and although I imagine all the hire boats get really busy in the summer on this Autumnal day they didn’t detract from the beauty and tranquillity of nature and water.Written January 13, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
