- Neil KLiverpool, UK614,656 contributionsSt Mary's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in Newcastle Upon Tyne, its also a major landmark, the cathedral sits in a built up area of the city and although the cathedral has no designated garden area it has a courtyard that contains a garden area in memory of Cardinal Basil Hume, there's also a statue dedicated to Basil Hume and a large granite prayer stone, its an interesting area to check out before you visit the church, its easy to locate along Clayton Street West and is most definitely well worth checking out.Written November 1, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neil KLiverpool, UK614,656 contributionsMy twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around this part of town when we chanced upon the beautiful St Andrew's Church, couldn't resist walking around the grounds for ten minutes or so ,as beautiful as the church is ,it was fascinating looking at the old tombstones, it was also nice to have a bit of a time out ,the garden area is so tranquil, looking at the old church was wonderful, it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Newgate Street.Written October 31, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neil KLiverpool, UK614,656 contributionsOn a week's holiday in Newcastle I was walking along the Quayside heading to The Quayside Pub when across the River Tyne more or less adjacent to Sage I spotted this church standing proudly overlooking the majestic river ,slightly intrigued, after my twin brother Stephen and I had enjoyed breakfast in The Quayside Pub and a few real ales we crossed Swing Bridge which brings you over to Gateshead and visit St Mary's Church.
No longer a practicing church, it's now a heritage centre, parts of this church building date from the 13th century, its a beautiful church, walking around the gardens was fascinating considering this was the only church in Gateshead till 1825 the gardens and graveyard are particularly small, beautifully kept, so cool looking at the ancient grave markers ,the gardens look super and the views afforded from the gardens of The River Tyne and bridges are awesome, its a beautiful church and garden area and most definitely well worth checking out if you're on this side of the River Tyne in Gateshead.Written October 9, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A magic gnome and fairy hide for kids and other quirky things dotted around. If you struggle to choose your cake in the cafe, the fruit scones were nice toasted with jam but my partner's lemon tart was to die for, exquisite pastry with lovely filling.Written June 10, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neil KLiverpool, UK614,656 contributionsLocated in the shadows of Cathedral Church Of St Mary's is the Basil Hume Memorial Gardens .
Although a little bit unkempt when we visited the garden area was still nice to view, unveiled by the queen ,its a nice area of the cathedral grounds being close to the Prayer Stone and Cardinal Basil Hume Statue, its most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning to visit Cathedral Church Of St Mary's and easy to locate along Clayton Street West.Written October 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A lovely oasis of calm, well kept grounds, so tranquil, what I found fascinating was the ancient tombstones, gives an indication of the serious history attached to this church, its most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Church Road.Written October 27, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Befitting such a beautiful church are the lovely well kept grounds on which the church sits ,nice bench seating to take in the views of this church, lovely features to keep you interested, don't forget this church has some serious history attached to it dating from 1287 ,there's a plaque in honour of Anne Fisher, an extraordinary woman, all in all its a church and church gardens I highly recommend you visit if you're in the area and easy to locate along Grainger Street.Written October 5, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
