A really enjoyable insight into this famous brewery and its now-ubiquitous produce. Our host was a characterful guide called Chris who clearly has deep and wide expertise in the subject, presumably through many years of working in the industry. He gave us a potted history of GK’s foundation (which was itself a fascinating and well-told story) then walked us through the whole brewing process in the “tower” brewery. Lastly we were treated to a private tasting session of half a dozen beers at the brewery tap which again, was both insightful and great fun. At some 2 hours in all, the tour is great value and it even includes a free drink for each customer afterwards. I’d very much recommend it to anyone who’s interested in British beer and/or the country’s industrial past. Be aware though that the walkabout entails climbing some steep metal steps and includes some slightly vertiginous views!!

With the town being packed during the last day of half term, I ventured for a bit of down time in the Abbey Gardens. With showery rain forecast, the sun came out, making it a delightful spot to sit and watch the world going by. Tall hedges sheltered me from the squally winds, allowing me to remove my coat outside for the first time this year.
Of course there's no colour in the beds yet, but in a few months it will be an absolute joy. There can be few places these days apart from public gardens where there is absolutely no charge for spending a delightful couple of hours.

Found this gem of a location by accident on the way home from Norwich. What was intended as a brief stop off resulted in a 3 hour stay including visiting the rotunda and doing a 5km walk around the grounds. Amazing estate full of mystery and history and location we will return to. Lovely cafe but the service was glacially slow even by NT standards. 30 minutes waiting is a line watching orders being prepared one by one - really NT, there is another way to manage a queue.

If you want to see snowdrops, this is the place to go, especially on a beautiful sunny day! The garden looked stunning, well kept pathways and manicured flower beds filled with adorable snowdrops. Throughout the garden, the nodding snowdrops cannot fail to catch one's eye and so good to see them carefully labelled, so that I could make a mental note of the special ones that caught my eye. Even better, I was able to buy some bulbs to add to my own collection. After my visit I felt that Spring really is around the corner!

Simply beautiful historical and garden site to visit. Bicycles are not allowed. Walking dogs on short leashes is permitted. Many individuals of all ages can be found wandering the grounds or sitting among the benches enjoying the sites. The gardens are stunning, and currently, littlest are permitted to climb some of the ruins- which is a great energy spender. Many bridal parties can be seen getting photos here, and we had our recent family photos taken on The Abbey grounds. It’s such a stunning location to enjoy a morning stroll. Sadly, the water garden area is typically closed off. Following a visit to the Abbey grounds, be sure to wander up through Angel Hill to visit the shops, restaurants, and thrift stores. It’s a delightful area to spend the day!

This theatre is simply a spectacular piece of history - well done to the National Trust, to those who support it and the volunteers who man it. We love going to the theatre and particularly local productions if we can. We were passing through Bury St Edmunds in October and on one night we were there, the Bury St Edmunds Operatic and Dramatic Society was putting on "Allo, Allo, part 2" - they were great - some real talents and to a person, they appeared to be enjoying themselves, but the real experience was getting to sit in the theatre - it is apparently the last remaining regency theatre in the Uk and it is lovely. We sat in a box, which was again an experience as it has a kind of seating we have never encountered before - hard to explain - basically you have to unfold the centre seat of the last two rows in our case to get to the front two seats in the box, and then refold the centre seats to sit in them. Really hard to explain. We had some laughs with our fellow patrons as we figured out how to manage the seating. They were surprisingly comfortable. However, if you suffer from claustrophobia, don't choose to sit in the first two seats, or even the second row of a box - you may feel a bit confined by the seating arrangement in having to assemble and reassemble the seats in order to get out. We sat in the last row and the view was fine and I did not feel confined. The people manning the doors were very helpful and pleasant and when I could not find a place to sit in the theatre bar, one of them kindly supplied a chair until the doors opened.
Honestly one of the most interesting theatre experiences we have ever had.

This was my first visit here for about ten years. Whilst there are limited things to see in the actual village / huts, the Anglo Saxon museum was new to me and was very informative, as was the archaeology gallery in the visitor centre. These added to the experience. It is a working site so expectations need to be managed about the actual village , the museums give a fuller picture of the site. I enjoyed a cuppa and a sausage roll in the cafe. Staff were friendly. Nice to enjoy a walk afterwards in the country park on a sunny winters day. I came by bus , only a mile walk from west stow turning, buses every hour.

Visiting St. Mary's Church was a truly humbling experience. The sheer scale of the interior is simply breathtaking. The soaring ceilings, intricate stonework, and the vibrant stained glass windows created an atmosphere of awe and wonder. I was particularly captivated by the Suffolk Chapel, a stunning example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture. It felt incredibly special to stand near Mary Tudor's grave, adding a touch of royal intrigue to my visit.

I was also mesmerized by the West Window, one of the largest in any parish church in England. The amount of detail and the sheer artistry were simply breathtaking.

I spent a considerable amount of time exploring every corner of the church, marveling at the intricate details and imagining the lives that have been touched by this sacred space. The atmosphere was surprisingly peaceful, despite the grandeur of the building.

I highly recommend a visit to St. Mary's Church to anyone exploring Bury St. Edmunds. It's a must-see landmark that will leave a lasting impression.
