Despite inclement weather, my husband and I joined a small group of tourists on a free guided walk round York. This walk had been recommended by the Tourist Office and runs daily at 1100 and 1500 hours. The tour lasted about two hours and throughout, the guide ALAN offered a very comprehensive, informative, and often amusing, view of York’s history from pre-Roman times to date. We visited most of the main historical sites inside the city walls. We both felt that we saw many areas which we would have missed on our own, and this has encouraged us to return during the next few days of our break to visit those places in greater detail. Included in the walk were The Minster; the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall; Clifford’s Tower; various gates in the city walls; the Shambles; Roman garrison remains and the locations linking to Guy Fawkes, Dick Turpin, and Henry VIII’s brutal suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace. We can highly recommend this tour and our guide.
