I just loved itWritten August 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The venue is beautiful, BUT beware if you buy a seat in the balcony: (i) unless you seated in the centre you will have a restricted view (even though they don't say this on the ticket) as you cannot see the sides of the stage, and (ii) they have put a stupid and completely unnecessary brass railing above the front parapet, and this obstructs your view of the stage if you are in the first few rows.
As for the performance, I did enjoy this overall. The minimalist scenery worked remarkably well, and both the singing and the orchestra were excellent. BUT, the choreography for the song 'With Cat-like Tread' (one of the 'big three' songs) was appalling. Normally this is used to display the pirate king's physical prowess (just search for the Kevin Kline version, probably the best ever!). Not only was there no such virtuosity, astonishingly the pirate king didn't even take part! What were they thinking?
I think they also missed a few other tricks, such as accentuating the humour of the situation when Frederick wants to kiss Mabel but she won't stop singing, or the comic potential of the cowardly police.
As I said, overall I did enjoy the evening (even though £9 for a single G&T is rather steep!) but this was not by any means the best version of the Pirates that I have seen.Written January 25, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Informal intimacy with its audience, and a welcoming support staff seal the deal. Get along to listen to this world class orchestra as soon as possible!Written February 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
