- ElegantGipsyVancouver95 contributionsHiking and fishing in Cathedral Park is a rare and exclusive privilege. To see its magnificent alpine meadows in full bloom and the panoramic vistas from its rugged ridges is once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can’t think of a much better way to reconnect even the most jaded traveller to nature and remind one of what life is truly worth living for. I just cannot say this more emphatically. This is a very special place.
An inconsiderate Tripadvisor reviewer recently complained about the $120 cost for transportation in a 4x4 Suburban into the heart of this pristine wilderness park. That was shocking. I was expecting next to read that they thought a McDonalds is missing here. This person did have the choice to walk up a 1200 metre vertical climb over 16 kilometres on a rugged 4x4 road. This person clearly doesn’t understand what it truly costs to maintain a road and a safe fleet of vehicles to ferry the 20-30 people a day that take the shuttle to visit this alpine wonderland during the short June-September season. The ride would still be a steal at $250. Staying in the Park overnight is a great option at campsites that cost around $10 a day or in a rustic, comfortable but understandably expensive lodge and cabins. (Imagine the cost of maintaining a small, fully-serviced lodge, fresh meals and cabins available for only a few months a year.) Check-out the new Japanese style, wooden outdoor hot tubs to get an idea of what lengths they go to to look after their guests. This small wilderness park is just the way it should be to keep it pristine and uncrowded, yet accessible and easy to enjoy in comfort. It’s fortunately remote, exclusive and hard to get to. If the inconsiderate reviewer and hundreds more a day could drive their “Jeeps” there, this fragile wilderness would get spoiled in no time, just as quickly as the lakes teeming with trout would get depleted.Written August 6, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Some of the wines we enjoyed today included
Chardonnay and pinot Noir. They have a wine labeled flamingo that is made from coronation table grapes. It was really interesting.
The wine tasting experience was pleasant. Overall, this winery can certainly boast a large amount of medals won for the wine that they produce here. The owners are extremely accommodating if you need something in particular, they even offered to keep pears out of the cooler for me to finish ripening them, if I called a couple of days before I came to pick them up. Looking forward to having at home. It was off season and they were painting and freshing things up. Urs and Barbara Baessler and winemaking son Charlie opened the original winery near Cawston in 2013.
After his Science and Agriculture degree from University of Lethbridge helped his transition to wine country, Charlie started with Herder Winery in 2008 then unto Burrowing Owl, and Clos du Soleil to hone his skills.
When his long sought after and dream location (Herder Winery) became available in 2015, the family purchased it- very serendipitous! Now Charlie and wife Jesce carry the torch and personalize the gorgeous property where the journey all started from!
Sheep and chicken graze the fields, sustainability and low energy consumption are practices and complete focus on craft wine make this Similkameen boutique winery a MUST VISIT! 🏆🍷🥂🍇⛰

St. Laszlos is one of British Columbia's oldest wineries. One of the original six. Because of this Joe the vintner offers wines that have aged a few years. We enjoyed many tastings. His aged wines taste like Madeira. If you want a fancy tasting bar then stay away. If you want some exceptional wines, come and savour. Wines created at St. Laszlos are only sold here. You can find them no where else. The locals know this and he was sold out of all of his fruit wines. - Bruce BKeremeos, Canada3 contributionsThere is really no trail to follow with marked signage. Which makes a little confusing because the columns are not very visible from the primitive roads. I would suggest walking from the bottom paved parking to the top. If you drive find a good place to park and then walk. The primitive road that will get you close. Is extremely rough even with a 4x4 you risk damage to your vehicle. I have traveled the road several times. Last year it was just about impassible. I have met several people at the top...they couldn't find the columns. I really don't think you can get lost in the area. But, be sure to have water with you. The Columns are well worth the time to visit amazing rock formations. Take water and lunch and enjoy the area. They purchased an organic apple and peach orchard near Cawston in 2005 and after 9 years of hard work transformed it into the family owned Hugging Tree Winery.
Son and winemaker Bradley (inspired by his time as a bartender in fine dining restaurants in Whistler) pursued his dream of wine making via Okanagan College Viticulture and Winemaking program to create the small lot craft wines many enjoy.
Roll forward to 2019, the family decided to sell the previous lot for 2 beautiful small lots which feature warmer micro-terroirs that could offer a broader portfolio. Bordelaise varietals, Viognier and Syrah are the focus.
Quaint country side atmosphere with an incredible valley and mountain backdrop and delicious wines really make this a Similkameen gem!

Well labeled, quality produce and their freeze dried fruits and candies are a family favorite! Lot of Seasonal organic fruits and veggies, preserves, hot sauces and ice cream.
