- mrmaccnzOrewa, New Zealand590 contributionsI have lived on Whangaparaoa for over 25 years and I have seen this club wax and wane between different owners. I never really saw it take off until recently.
The upstairs bar and restaurant were closed for years apart from events and it always seemed such a waste to me.
I recently decided to try playing there again as somewhere different to try and I was blown away by the changes. I am not sure what they have done but it is working!
The café down stairs is friendly helpful and offers a good range of food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic, the pro shop staff CANNOT DO ENOUGH TO HELP!
They bend over backwards to ensure you have a good time and a great game of golf.
NOW finally the upstairs bar and restaurant is open and you cannot fault the staff. They are friendly, attentive and make your after game drinks enjoyable.
If you are looking for something to do and just want a day trip out then I highly recommend you visit and have a look around whether you are a golfer or not.Written January 20, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AllbokSouth Pacific15 contributionsHaving played at Wainui golf course a year ago with mixed feelings, I was pleasantly surprised at the significant improvement in the overall condition of the course. The greens were all in good condition as was the fairways which had a good coverage of grass considering the lack of rain. Further notable improvement has been the cutting back of the rough on many holes which on my prior visit accepted gladly a number of lost balls. The course is a real challenge particularly the 13,14 and the 16th which is a monster that low markers will enjoy. Overall a high five to the club and green keepers for making the course more suitable to mid handicap players, who make up the bulk of golfers.Written February 19, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - woopinOcean Shores, Australia73 contributionsPlayed with a friend ...great course and well worth playing. It has been hot and dry this Summer but the fairways and greens are in great shape . It is not an easy course but is playable for all levels. The carts have navigation and it worked well helping make club decisions easier for a visitor.Written February 7, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a little rough in some areas but the greens are great and the layout fantastic.

A very busy course, groups on every tee. But in the scheme of things a four hour game was fine.
The greens are some of the best I have experienced. The fairways undulating and mainly narrow but challenging.
A coastal breeze both days but what a wonderful experience. Views of the harbours from most holes.
Lots of cries of fore which was slightly unnerving as we are not used to this.
Many holes that could be considered signature holes anywhere else. It was a real treat.
We were lucky to play with a couple of decent blokes from remuneration club who were great company.
The pro shop staff were very friendly, and the pro shop sold good drinks and food, easy to grab a snack after 9 holes.
Our cart wa so slow on day one we almost thought we were going backwards. But to be honest we didn’t need it other than to have a soft seat whilst waiting. On day two we walked which was very pleasant despite lots of hills.

- AotearoaBoyAuckland, New Zealand9 contributionsHave used Maxwell's for a number of years. Host Kaye is warm and friendly and always accomodated requests on special needs. They have all the gear to host business events. Conference facility is probably Ok for no more than 14, so great for a small team. An idyllic setting, tucked away of the Southern motorway. Totally reccommend.
Food was fantastic, also flexible around catering.Written February 17, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Very small but all the necessary things for an overnight stay and to prepare breakfast next morning.
Comfortable large king bed and clean sheets! Shower was also tiny but clean and suited our needs.Written March 6, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Several months prior to my arrival I shot off emails to Golf course Directors, Golf Professionals, etc. to understand my best options. My criteria---Quality test of golf/and an uncommon layout, links or inland either fine, central location in the City of Auckland and last on the list was affordability.
My 2 top responses came from Peter Hay-McKenzie, head professional at Maungakiekie G.C. and the Golf Director at Titirangi whose name escapes me now. Peter responded in a nearly coaching manner suggesting a multiple play short term member card that would allow a substantial savings and weekday/twilight access and some weekend play. After having paid a $100.00 to ship my clubs I was determined to play golf. I settled on MGC on proximity to my stay location, a more playable course since I played rarely more than once a year for two decades and Peters caring suggestion.
Much to my delight MGC had texture as it was built on rolling hills, at least 10 holes that began as a mystery as too where the greens were or the fairways would lead to, or which direction they would shape over a rise or drop. And despite the summer drought the greens held well and putted true. I was a great exercise in walking and I was paired with an exceptional array of professional men from around the globe. I was greeted by Peter, Jeff and others always with courtesy and respect and enjoyed the care and attention from the staff upstairs at the bar/restaurant. I played nine full rounds here and despite invites or recommendations to play elsewhere I felt my loyalty to Peter and Maungakiekie this summer. My thanks and gratitude for all you provided me at your great Golf Club with hopes of returning next year (2016) Greg and Mullika AlexanderWritten March 12, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is some renovation ongoing but this did not distract us. The staff at the Club were very friendly and helpful. The members were also very welcoming. Highly recommend the Bar and Cafe as well. A great day out - Club hire andCart Hire available and the course is easily reached by taxi.Written January 27, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
