Confession time: I really like to shop when I travel. It's a cultural experience in its own way, especially when I get to visit a small, locally owned business in a residential neighborhood.
Bernardi's is that kind of place. It's a 40+ year-old family owned antique shop with a beautiful and large collection of wares. Tons of silver, crystal, china, porcelain, as well as lamps, chandeliers and furniture. One case of jewelry.
I spent over an hour chatting with Laura, one of the owners, while browsing for some gifts I want to buy. She is a lovely and knowledgable person, with an eye for the unusual; a marquetry box with a puzzle opening, a silver plate "biscuitiére" with a two sided opening below a carved ivory handle.
The shop is well stocked, wonderfully free of dust, and in April of 2016, having a store wide 20% off sale. They will ship, even internationally, and they buy. (I overheard Laura very kindly letting down a would-be seller whose item was not as special as she hoped -- she left with her item, but also a short course on genuine alabaster statuary.)
If you're strolling Mt. Pleasant street, drop in and enjoy this unique, well-curated and friendly place. My new-to-me gold earrings were a really good deal on sale, and I may yet go back for that wedding gift!
