- Gari K77 contributionsThe location of this activity is close to Valladolid, not Cancun, and if you follow their website directions on Google you will be lead straight to the office where you book, pay and begin the tour. In a single day and for a very fair price we got to spend a couple of hours walking and swimming in the underground river caves, followed by a drive into the jungle to a secret cenote, absailing into the cenote as many times as you can physically do it. It was all finished by a hearty lunch at a local house. We were lead, driven and guided by a group of local community members who are trying to develop sustainable tourism in their area.
We were very happy and recommend these people and these activities to anyone.Written October 26, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Overhanging cliff has mats marking safe place to jump. Wonderful place to swim, snorkel, or scuba.
Follow the rules - NO sunscreen or sunblock. That damages the cenote.
Long, hot walk - worth getting a ride or taxi. One room restroom for each gender not super clean but at least they are present.Written April 11, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David DDevon, UK28,538 contributionsWednesday 30th October and we took the local bus from our Hotel Riu Palace Los Americas to the extensive shopping area, La Isla Cancún.
Rather than catch the bus back we decided to walk, it was a distance of about five and half kilometres. The pathway ran alongside the Lagoon, while the other side of the road was lined with hotels, not all were open.
This is one of the Lagoons around which the Zona Hotelera in Cancun has been created.
Within the Lagoon system Nichupte is the largest and is separated from this one by a sand bank which virtually encloses it from the other Lagoons. The smaller lagoons are Somosaya and Rio Ingles. Combined they cover an area of roughly forty-eight kilometres square. The deepest point is about four and a half metres.
As we walked along the side of the Lagoon there were numerous signs warning that there were crocodiles in the Lagoon.
Interspersed along the waters edge were a few small wooden jetties, which appeared to serve was water taxi or Lagoon boat tours pick up and drop off points.
Nearby the La Isla shopping centre there was a small marina with a number of boats moored up.
It was a bit sad to see a number of restaurants and shopping precincts along the way that had closed down and were falling in to disrepair.
The day prior to our long walk by the Lagoon, we did visit the Statue of Alberto Bajorquez which is on the edge of the Lagoon near our Hotel.
The statue (reviewed separately) is in tribute to Senor Bajorquez the first hotel investor in Cancun, he opened the doors of his hotel to guests in 1974. He is attributed with being the founder of tourism in Cancun.
The Lagoon is named in his honour.Written December 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
