I went on the Trekking Through the Volcanoes tour with Mexico Travesias guide Alberto and 4 other trekkers this Sunday (10/29/23). The tour was well organized from the meet-up, with good explanations about what was going to happen, and realistic expectations about the trip. This included an honest warning that traffic would likely be extra heavy due to the F1 race (which it was!). We made one stop on the way to the volcanoes for restrooms and to buy breakfast/snacks, if desired. We were provided with backpacks with a bottle of water, bottle of Gatorade, sandwich, apple and a couple of other snacks. We were also given trekking poles. It was cold at the beginning of the dat, so I was glad I brought a fleece and a rain jacket, but I did end up warming up and taking them off after 30-45 minutes. I am a moderate runner who regularly exercises at least 3 times per week (at sea level), and in the altitude, I did find it difficult to catch my breath after going uphill for just a few steps. Alberto did a great job giving us many breaks, checking on us frequently, and monitoring us for signs of altitude sickness. I think we spent about 5 hours hiking, although I am not exactly sure, since I was paying more attention to the beautiful views. I reapplied sunscreen twice, but should have done even more frequently, as I still got slightly sunburnt! After the hike, we stopped at an outdoor roadside restaurant to eat tacos and quesadillas, which were included in the price of our day. The drive home took over 2 hours due to the extra F1 race traffic, but it was ok since I had been warned! The day was totally worth it! I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to get out of the city and see the volcanoes but has not trained beforehand or does not want to hike at a grueling pace!
