Secluded beach reached by a moderate hike through steep, narrow cliff paths, revealing dramatic coastal scenery and wildlife. Ideal for tranquil swims and snorkeling. Not for young children.

- Michael BTofino, Canada3 contributionsQuick question, are there umbrellas/chairs available to rent at Anse de Grande Saline? If so, what are they charging? - Omit MajumdarMontreal, Canada21 contributionsGreat beach and seeing planes fly by is awesome. More on the expensive side for food/drinks but it is expected. You can walk along the beach and find all the different restaurants and bars.Written September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lee KPrairie Village, KS1,119 contributionsWe arrived by cruise ship to Gustavia and they recommended Shell Beach. Great place to visit. Beautiful sandy beach and turquoise water.
There is a small restaurant nearby.

Trail very easy to follow.Written December 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Dennis SFort Myers, FL57 contributionsAnde du Gouverneur is a beautiful beach with sugar sand, nice surf, and has 2 sections. Getting there is fairly easy traveling for us in a rental car on a windy paved road through some nice neighborhoods and has markings to direct you. The initial area is for suit wearers, some topless, and a 100 yard walk is frequented by Au Natural folks. The area for Au Natural has some recessed areas with natural beach plants providing some “semi privacy” which was pleasant. The beach itself is very nice, but has a fairly steep drop off to chest high water. felt safe swimming here.Written March 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - steve zNashville, TN895 contributionsA dark sand beach that can be crowded. Go to the left and walk a while to get to a less crowded area.Written December 2, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Neely LTravelers Rest, SC183 contributionsAnse des Flamands is a very beautiful and quiet section of St. Barth’s. The beach is pristine. During our visit, much of the area around this beach was undergoing restoration from Hurricane Irma.Written July 23, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris MHopewell, NJ98 contributionsThis is truly a unique experience. The hike from Grand Fond is moderate and very enjoyable, as you walk along the ocean cliff the entire time. The herd of goats is also a hoot. Once you reach the pools and make your way down, you are rewarded with refreshing, crystal clear wading water. We stayed for about 90 minutes and did not see another person.
Here are a few tips
- wear light hiking shoes or sneakers for the hike, but pack some water shoes in your backpack. Switch footwear once you get to the pools. You will thank me.
- bring water and sunscreen. Seriously!
- there are some decent websites and blogs online that will help you find the pools. I’ve added one photo that may also help. In the photo, you will see the sand beach in the foreground (that’s about halfway on the hike) and I have circled you final destination in the background.
- watch out for sea urchins as you climb around the pools.Written October 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I wouldn’t want to swim here, but what a beautiful place to walk and enjoy the ocean views in solitude. I later read that this is one of St Barths best surfing beaches. Who knew? It was deserted when we visited.Written May 26, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Carolyn G96 contributionsThis beach is pretty and the view out to Grand Cul de Sac is lovely. It's not a large beach and there are hotels and at least two restaurants on it. The whole bay is very shallow. You can walk out several hundred feet and still be waist deep. The cool thing about this beach is that there are lots of large turtles living off of it. At the restaurant O'Corail you can rent transparent kayaks and row out to see them. In our experience there were more and larger turtles here than in Columbier, which is where we go to snorkel with them.Written May 1, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Faith PMinneapolis, MN51 contributionsIf you want what feels like your own private beach this is the place to go. Easy to get to and to bring your snacks for the day...such a nice quite piece of paradise.Written January 26, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GRZChicago, IL13,131 contributionsNothing much is left of the Fort and the views while nice are nowhere close to what the Gustavia Lighthouse offers, in my personal opinion. The best view while "on the fort" are of the Shell Beach and this is really in my opinion the highlight of this stop.
The trick of "Fort Karl" is not to just stop here but actually take a walk to the other area by the hospital where there is a beautiful "wooden suspended boardwalk" facing west - it's right in front of the hospital's parking lot. From here also wander around the marina and Gustavia - the Fort Karl stop itself is just a small piece of an overall day trip to Gustavia everyone should do.
TIP: parking is fairly limited, supposedly by hospital it's OK to park but a bit north we were able to easily park by some residential buildings for the full day and explored the area :)Written December 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
