What travelers are saying
- Rach&DarMontreal, Canada331 contributionsA truly awe inspiring landscape awaits you at 27 Charcos. Just to say right from the beginning, if you drive there yourself which is about 30 minutes outside the city the cost is much less than using a tour company. It is a hike up to the start and maybe not recommended for anyone with breathing troubles or any physical disability that requires a decent amount of walking. Our guide Charlie made sure to let us stop and rest and also explain different flora as we hiked up. We did 7 of the waterfalls and it lasted about 90 minutes. Even if you are not up for jumping off cliffs into the clear water there are either ladders or slides you can use instead. But just being in the middle of the jungle surrounded by the natural beauty was just as incredible. They state on their website that water shoes are suggested because of the hike and for once in the water, however normal water or beach shoes used to get in the ocean while snorkelling are not enough and we found this out the hard way. It would be best to have a Velcro sandal or even an old pair of runners to wear as the hike up and down requires a shoe with a good sole. They do rent shoes there to wear also. We had a great time and think this is a must when in Puerto plata.Written May 2, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- PrunellanjWarren, NJ62 contributionsExciting ride in a cable car with a beautiful view. Sometimes because of the cross winds it can be closed. So check ahead!Written May 3, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Jennifer & Randy24 contributionsOcean World was awesome, even more fun than expected. It is pricey but well worth the cost. We booked our trip thru the resort we were staying in, and chose to do the Dolphin Encounter as an added experience. It is not the same as the Dolphin Swim, they are 2 separate encounters. Lunch was also included. We were able to get in the water, touch the dolphin and watch as it clapped for us and did little tricks. They are amazing creatures. There was a guide that helped us navigate the different shows so we wouldn’t miss anything. We saw all of their shows: the Sea Lion show, Dolphin Show, Shark Show, Bird Show. We had front row seats at each show. The shows are included, not an additional cost. The birds are amazing too. You have to go inside the bird enclosure and see the ‘love birds’, and feed them. This park is not as large as other water parks (like Sea World), so you are able to get close to the animals during shows, we were front row at each show, there were no lines. You can easily see all of the shows and do additional encounters in one day without missing anything or being exhausted. Take a camera, I read you couldn’t take photos, but that is only in relation to the ‘encounters’. The park has photographers that take photos during encounters you can purchase later. But you can take all of the photos you want around the park. It is a once in a lifetime experience.Written May 7, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- B1714DBelgrade, Serbia12,348 contributionsThis is an old historic fort in old town Puerto Plata. It dates back to mid 16 century being built for several decades as a protective fort for the Spanish crown colonies. Despite that, it was conquered several times by the pirates who looted the city.
In 19 c it was used as a prison for independence fighters and one of the inmates was Juan Pablo Duarte, father of the nation, and there's a room dedicated to him inside.
Fort is pretty small yet interesting, offering scenic views. Entry fee is only a couple of dollars.Written February 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - richj65Chicago, IL1,019 contributionsSince I was there during pandemic it was amazing how empty the beach was. Clean beach with crystal clear water. No beach chairs because there were less than ten people although it was early morning.Written November 18, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- David SWest Windsor Township, NJ117 contributionsI took the tour of the visitor center with rum tasting. The staff were all friendly. We were able to taste 8 or 9 different rums. After which, we stopped for a few minutes at the on-site store. The store also has a bar that sells rum drinks.Written March 8, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- B1714DBelgrade, Serbia12,348 contributionsLike in most Caribbean towns, the Malecon is the first street running by the sea.
This one in Puerto Plata runs for 3-4 km, passing by some older houses within the residential area. However, this part is not that interesting for tourists.
More interesting is the far western part of Malecon by the San Felipe park and fortress (read that review). This part was reconstructed, is well guarded by police, safe and interesting to see.Written February 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - HoberMomOf3Spencerville, Canada6 contributionswent privately- amazing - only suggestion is more cabanas/access to food/drink etc. at the island. privately gave much more to see/do. lunch was amazing!Written March 14, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- imranb132019Mississauga, Canada5 contributionsIf youre a fan of rare stones, especially amber, this is one place you'll enjoy visiting. They give you a history lesson on how the stones are mined and how they came about, with a brief live demonstration of different types of formation. They tend to place alot of silver within the amber for jewellery, such as necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. Alot of nice features, plenty of amber shops around, alot of fake and real stones aswell. Overall definitely worth a visit. Cheers.Written March 5, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- B1714DBelgrade, Serbia12,348 contributionsThe San Felipe Cathedral is the main Church of Puerto Plata, visible from almost everywhere in town with its two bell towers.
It dominates the classic central square of Spain colonial cities with the square in size Independence park occupied with many locals and so lively.
The Cathedral stands on the site of the former 16 c one which was destroyed during the Independence war. New Cathedral has a modern architecture and nice stained glass. We were lucky to visit it during the Mass.Written February 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - dogsruleNova Scotia, Canada2,872 contributionsSo enjoy meandering at the top of the mountain, a very relaxing spot, have done it at least 4 times! - Martin L4 contributionsThe go karts are tire and in need of love, but it's still lots of fun and the price is reasonable. Kids will enjoy it.Written May 23, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- B1714DBelgrade, Serbia12,348 contributionsThis is the center of the action in the very center of Puerto Plata. It's a small square size plaza right by the Cathedral with many locals around.
It represents the original and authentic life of this Caribbean town - expect that, nothing more, and it was very cute to us.Written February 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Glenn WDorchester131 contributionsA beautiful beach close to a resort with the warmest water you can imagine.
