We stopped at this location during a walking tour. Our guide gave an overview of purpose of this location and the the heroes that are buried here.

It has a very interesting feel to it. There are a lot of architectural features if you look closely.

Some 20 min walk from the SD tourist zone of Zona Colonial will take you to this National Palace. It was built in the middle of 20 c under dictator Trujillo in a neoclassical style housing the National Parliament and President's office.
However you cannot pass the gates, nor tour the building which makes it only a 5 min stop for some outside pics, so decide yourself if it's worth that walk.

The embassy of the United States of America recently constructed a cool and modern looking embassy in the northern section of the city. I personally have never been inside but the building looks impressive from the outside.
