What travelers are saying
- Steven L133 contributionsWe had a great hike with a terrific guide, Javier Pizarro (yamirla.gtm@informed.sld.cu)
Javier was knowledgeable about the area and the history of Cuba, passionate about his country and keen to educate along the way of the hike. Javier met us the day before and briefed us well about the hike.
The hike itself is reasonably steep toward the end although Javier will manage the pace with you. The view from the top is spectacular.
Bring thongs/crocs/reef shoes to cross the river at the start. You will need every bit of the two liters of water you are supposed to bring. Also bring small CUC to tip the coffee farmer and the fruit guy, both of who you will no doubt meet.
A well earned swim in the river awaits you at the end. Such a good day.Written June 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Danglish.adventuresCopenhagen, Denmark450 contributionsFor 15cuc plus 1 CUC bike parking fee we were able enjoy a great day out drinking and eating. The sea is teaming with fish and is perfect for snorkeling. For 25 cuc you can also go diving.Written January 16, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- LourdesHavana1913Havana, Cuba12 contributionsWe hire a Jeep in Baracoa to go to Yumuri. The road to this place is a beautiful landscape all the way. Once we arrived, we took a boat through the river and arrived into paradise. Nature lovers must go hereWritten November 22, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- susanaqueridaVancouver, Canada437 contributionsThere is an error in this listing. the Cienaga de Zapata is in Giron, not Varadero.
At the Cienaga de Zapata, there's a Crocodile refuge, which tour buses go to. You can
see Cuba's unique species of crocodile, which is small & see the other larger types in a pond. As for the Parque Nacional and walking tours,
there are at least 4 different sites, each in different directions. It's a protected area so a guide should accompany you. In Playa Larga, there's a gate off the highway at the entrance to the village and a small office with the name, Cienaga de Zapata - Parque Nacional. They can arrange guided tours & they have a map to explain the different types of tours. It's CUC 15 per person just to enter. The guide is on top of that. There are 3 bird watching tours, 2 from Playa Larga. The guide/taxi will take you to the start. A homestay/casa particular knows guides & transport, also. Transport (could be a horse cart) is about CUC 25-35 depending on which tour you choose. Here are some:
Salinas de Brito - excellent for aquatic birds. It's 20 Km from Playa Larga. About 3 hours.
Refugio de Aves de Soprilar - birds that are endemic to Cuba. About 2.5 hours
Refugio de Aves de Bermejas - birds that are endemic to Cuba. About 2.5 hours, accessible from Playa Giron
Enigma de las Rocas - Walk into the trees & there's a lovely cenote, where you can go swimming, snorkelling or even diving. Many tours come here, so it can get noisy but if you're there before or after, it's very pleasant. There's a restaurant, pay parking & a bathroom.Written February 13, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - PaulshappyCourtenay, Canada3,922 contributionsThe Parque de la Libertad is a lovely park, and an excellent starting place for your Matanzas walking tour.
Stroll through the park like a Cuban, enjoy the sights and sounds, and take pics of the statues. And then cross the street and continue strolling around the 4 streets fronting the park, including the Pharma Museum and Hotel Velasco, two MUST sees!
And yes, locals will approach you about how wonderful Canadians are (AND we are!), so do listen and interact and at the end, if they hold out their hand, give a few bucks. Why not? Our life is so good, why not share a bit of it with our Cuban brothers?Written April 14, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - ginger_jrMilton Keynes, UK890 contributionsIt’s a nice big stadium and should be on everyone’s list of things todo or see when in Havana
It is also a WiFi hotspotWritten February 19, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - zee56Delta, Canada19 contributionsA quick 15 min bus ride from our resort and we arrived at the marina where we boarded a 42 ft dive boat. Very quickly we were on our way out to a small cayo where we anchored for a snorkeling session.
The crew chummed the water and instantly the area was filled with various species of fish; even saw a barracuda. The anchorage is very shallow, about 1 – 2 meters so you don’t have to be a great swimmer to feel comfortable. A 90 min boat cruise, through the mangrove lined channels get you to the ecological park. A short hike up the trail and we were met by the park staff who provided us with helmets and flash lights for our tour of the cave system. It’s a short easy walk and suddenly the large cave entrance looms. We were guided through the various chambers and rooms and marveled at the various calcite flows, pillars and staligmites/stalacites. After approximate 300m it was time to return topside. When we returned to our boat the crew had laid out a light lunch of meats, cheeses, fruits, and bread. Once lunch was devoured it back up the trail where we found our waiting jeeps.. with 4 to jeep we convoyed out through the mangroves and utilimately reach our destination, Rancho Querete. Now its time for a short trail ride and/or a leisurely swim in crystal pool.
A great all day event , a wonderful way to see a lot of Cuban flora and fauna from both land and sea.Written April 24, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - TennistaToronto, Canada13 contributionswalking on the eroded limestone tricky if you have bad knees or hip. Very enjoyable. Get a guide. Scenic.Written February 10, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
