We had an amazing trip to Cuba last week. Thank you, Bespoke Cuba Travel! My husband and I are seasoned travelers, usually organizing our own travel, but not being familiar with Cuba (and finding differing information online), we wanted a professional to help plan our trip.
From my first online request, through my many, many emails, Ivett was patient, responsive and flexible. She listened to my requests and put together a great itinerary in both Havana and Playa Larga. In Havana we had two car tours (important to me) - one of which focused on the mafia in Havana - a walking tour of Old Havana, tours of a rum factory and cigar factory, fantastic restaurant reservations, and a great bed and breakfast.
Scuba diving is a favorite hobby of ours, so Ivette planned a trip to Playa Larga (Bay of Pigs). Our driver was also a top-notch tour guide, which was an unexpected bonus. He also took us to the crocodile farm and to see the world's smallest hummingbird (literally in someone's back yard!). We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast and met the nicest hosts. We had two great dives in the Bay of Pigs and also visited Museo Giron, the Bay of Pigs museum. I highly recommend it.
Last, but not least, our concierge, Claudia, was amazing. She met us at the first bnb and went over everything with us, then gave us a cell phone to contact her. Each day she would either meet us or contact us via cell. She was very helpful, changing our restaurant reservations when we wanted to eat at a different time or finding us a cab when we were too tired to walk as planned. She also brought me an unexpected gift on my birthday. ;)
A few things we discovered about Cuba:
It's amazing - go, NOW!
American dollars are taken almost everywhere.
You can exchange dollars for Cuban pesos with your bnb if needed.
It is very safe. I didn't ever feel uncomfortable, even walking dark streets at night.
The people are amazing.
The rum is out of this world. Try a daquiri at the Floridita (where they were invented and Hemingway hung out)
The history is fascinating.
Bring school supplies, toiletries and feminine hygiene products if you can. Playa Larga (and outside Havana) doesn't have reliable access to these items. Our guide helped us distribute them.
The food is amazing. And so cheap. Dinner at one of the best restaurants in town was $100, for appetizers, entrees and multiple drinks for two people.
The scuba diving is very good.
