Many thanks to the men who founded this place, the families who donated thousands of acres of pristine land, and the National Park Service for preserving and maintaining it for us to enjoy!
... horse driven carriage rides, tea at the Jordan Pond House, Alpine Lakes, scenic views (sunrise & sunset) from Cadillac Mountain, etc. Children can become Junior Park Rangers by completing certain assigned tasks.

Cadillac Mountain Acadia National Park
#3 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Cadillac Mountain on Mount Desert Island in Maine (part of Acadia National Park) is a really great place to take a drive by yourself, with a friend or loved one, or with the whole family.
We did the Mount Washington Auto Road earlier this year and that was somewhat terrifying when you are driving a full size Ram 1500 but the Cadillac Mountain road was just fun, cannot wait to go back with the kids!

Schoodic Point Winter Harbor
#6 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Our kids (and I) have had great fun romping along the rocks and risking getting wet from the ocean spray.
Had a great day to sit on the rocks while the Kid ran around and climbed on the rocks surrounding the shore.
Quoddy Head State Park Lubec
#7 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Caution should be taken with children, lots of cliffs, incredible surf and some of the scariest and most awe inspiring tides in the world.
Great hike- families could do this but always be careful.
Schoodic Peninsula Bar Harbor

The arts and lobster festival during August are great family fun as well.
This was perfect with our 3 kids (ages 6, 11, and 12).

Just great vistas, families or solo- all good.
Kids love climbing around the rocks--generally safe.
Ocean Trail Bar Harbor

Great views all around and a relatively easy trail even with smaller kids.
While our kids tackled the Beehive Trail, my husband & I embarked on the Ocean Path starting at Sand Beach.
Park Loop Road Acadia National Park
#12 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
It is a lovely outing and will satisfy the adventurous kids with lots of cliffs and rocks to jump on and over, yet the walking trails are perfect for older adults - even ones with reduced mobility.
I have been visiting Acadia for over 40 years and the Loop Road is the most convenient way to see the park if you have family members or friends who are unable hike, bike or enjoy the sights on foot.

West Quoddy Head Light Lubec

The lighthouse was great and inside the small museum they offered a scavenger hunt for the kids that we enjoyed.
We will return to Lubec with the kids this summer to hike and explore some more the area has to offer.
Shore Path Bar Harbor
#14 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
We stayed in Bar Harbor for a week with our 3 young kids and a big topic of conversation was the shore path - we walked it and loved exploring Bar island.
This is an amazing hike but a word of caution, if you’re hiking with children keep a close eye on them.

Eagle Lake Acadia National Park Bar Harbor
#16 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Carriage trails for easy walks with families with children or pets, and more traditional hiking trails as well.
Easy for children, and with enough room for even the most busy August day , you will remember looping the lake and carry home Beauty in your thoughts.
Great Head Trail Acadia National Park
#17 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Either way, I recommend that you wear appropriate hiking shoes and keep a close eye on young kids and the elderly who may need help scrambling up rocks.
This is a great early morning or afternoon hike and one that the whole family can experience.
Carriage Roads Acadia National Park

Also, there are many wild blueberry bushes along the trail, which our kids loved picking and eating!
Took my wife and kids biking around Jordan Pond, which was a bit of a hill but well worth it for the views.
Otter Cliff Acadia National Park

The Ocean Trail runs along the ocean and is very relaxing to hike on and is family friendly.
We were watching some kids run around on the rocks and it made us a bit nervous.
Land Bridge to Bar Island Bar Harbor
#21 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
The kids loved wading through the tidal pools to see what we could find, little lobsters, different types crabs under rocks, hermit crabs, snails, and the list goes on.
All in all, definitely a fun and cool must-do if you are visiting Bar Harbour, especially with kids.
Criterion Theater Bar Harbor
#22 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
We've been going there since we were kids, but it was wonderful to be there again and enjoy the Art Deco style and see how in restoring it, after some hard years, it is still amazing.
This has been my hometown theatre since I was a kid, almost every summer blockbuster of my childhood was seen here, Star Wars (the first one), Aliens, Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, And full disclosure, I also volun...
Bubble Rock Acadia National Park
#23 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
South Bubble is a fun short hike, mild scrambling, and near the summit you and your family are rewarded with a chance to attempt to push Bubble Rock off a cliff :) It was fun and our kids (5 and 6) loved it.
The trail we chose was much steeper and required a significant amount of climbing and rock scrambling particularly near the top - it would be difficult for small children or those who tire easily.

The part of the loop that we did was easy and just a simple walk around the park, I would recommend this if you wanted to do a nice easy walk after dinner or lunch or if you were with young children that couldn't...
Going at a leisurely pace with the kids (with some stops along the way), we made it around in under 2 hours.

Ship Harbor Nature Trail Bass Harbor
#30 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
My kids enjoyed this part of the walk so much that we spent more time than we had expected, so if you like exploring rocky shores you may want to allow yourself some extra time to linger at this spot.
Great little hiking path for the whole family!
Agamont Park Bar Harbor
#31 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Park was full of people coming and going, but it was a pleasure seeing families and people enjoying the view, the paths and the fresh air.
Let the kids play Frisbee or climb all over the canons!
Sand Beach Acadia National Park
#32 of 240 things to do in DownEast and Acadia Maine
The water is too cold to enjoy (though we saw brave kids battle through it) but my older son had absolute joy on his face the entire time we were there (my little one napped peacefully as well).
My family visited this beach on our vacation and loved it so much we went back another day!

There is a small park with a swing set, a dock where you can see boats, lobster buoys, a harbor seal, and a coastal waterways touch tank so kids can see and touch lobster.
This was a one night stay whilst on a road trip with the parents and the boy child.
