This moderate route in Volcano National Park has a well-maintained trail that takes the hiker through the diverse landscape of Kilauea Iki, including walking across the lava bed floor.

Absolutely Fabulous Experience - Had a terrific tour with (John) Park Ranger - Very informative - personable - In Awe with the size of the crater and the long history of varied options.
An active volcano, view the active caldera, being able to hike through a cooling caldera, lava tubes, more hikes than you can imagine, rain forest, beautiful birds, spiders, petroglyphs, sea archs.

... of Craters Road with various stops including short walk through the Thurston Lava Tube, lookouts over lava fields and various craters, and a 1.4 mile round trip hike across lava fields to see ancient petroglyphs.
If you are a bit more adventurous you can take a longer hike across the volcanic rock northward for about an hour and you will find active lava flow that you can get as close to as you dare.

The arch is sculptured out of the basaltic lava flows from the volcano and the erosion from the ocean, formed in 100ft cliffs it is likely only several hundred years old.
This arch is located at the end of the "End of Chain of Craters Road" you can stop here to see the Arch or take a 5 mile hike to the live lava flow viewing area.

Structurally, Kīlauea has a large, fairly recently formed caldera at its summit the Halemaumau Crater and when we viewed it it was just “bubbling” lava since our visit of course there has been significant activity.
It is beautiful with the naked eye, but with binoculars - WOW! We also hiked out to the lava viewing area to see the lava enter the ocean.

We parked our rental car at the parking lot of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park visit center and took the hiking trail to see Sulphur Banks and Steam Vents, The hike is short with amazing views.
Your first experience of the power of nature as steam and sulphur permeates the air as you walk along side crevices in the earths surface allowing the gases from the volcanic activity deep beneath your feet to esc...

Good ranger led discussion at the crater edge (check the times on the NPS board at the Kilauea Visitor Center) that discusses a good bit of park history and the recent volcanic activity from 2018.

Very interesting different lava formations on the drive down Chain of Craters Road and on the hike itself, then the many petroglyphs were icing on the cake for this fun and easy hike.
This site includes thousands of petroglyphs (rock carvings), including cupules and rings, as well as representations of people and turtles, and what might be records of journeys.

Beyond the normal vistas and crowds at Volcano NP, a short drive up Mauna Loa Road delivers you to a Kipuka is an area of older vegetation surrounded by a more recent lava flow from Mauna Loa.
I enjoyed learning about the birds, plants, and history of this special place.

A full moon made it hard to star gaze but did light up the landscape and a vivid glow emanated from Halema‘uma‘u (the crater you visit in the park next to Jagger Museum)!!
WARNING: do not venture out into the lava fields alone without really good offtrail route finding skills.

Harry, the owner and tour guide, is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about lava tubes and gives a very good tour - you will learn everything you wanted to know about lava tubes and more.
He imparts so much great information on how lava tubes are made by nature and by the force of lava, gasses, and the natural power of heat, cooling and pressure all applied over many hundreds of years.
