The view, the castle, the history, the shrines, the onsen hotel next to it, and the direct connections to / from Nagoya, Gifu and the airport -- definitely a must-go.

The Higashiyama Walking Course is a pleasant walking route through Takayama's temple town (Teramachi), the city's rural "suburbs" and Shiroyama Park, a wooded hill and former site of Takayama Castle.
After a while some of the shrines and temples seem to sort of blend in with each other, but you also come across some unexpected surprises with beautiful architecture and sights.
