... in an adjacent hollow, the stunningly beautiful church of St Mary and St David, with its rounded apse and domed ceilings, was built in the early part of the 12th century, in the style known as Romanesque.
... mountains on the site of a medieval village lies this exquisite little church, also 12th century, with fabulous gargoyles and corbels inside and out that remain unrestored and in mint condition despite the years.

Anyway, the church is built partially on what remains of the Cistercian Abbey and it’s mighty impressive in scale, light quality and wall paintings of the time of Queen Anne.
Anyone who has an interest in history or who just wants a few moments of peace and quiet -- I would strongly recommend a stop by Dore Abbey!

Interesting place with lovely gardens and plant centre (great plants at very reasonable prices) Run pretty much on an honesty box method, so unusual in this day and age!
A walk through the woods and past the house and deer park was also good.

The castle is another fantastic offering and if you climb the stairs, you have the most amazing countryside views!
We liked that we were able to climb up onto one of the castle walls, it was great to be able to look down on the central courtyard & get a different perspective.

If you can, join when there's one of the knowledgeable friendly guides are there to talk you through the Mappa Mundi, with its unique perspective from the time of its creation.
An extension to the cathedral to exhibit the mappamundy and the chained library is well worth a visit if you are interested in how the earth was drawn by early scholars as well of volumes of medieval books.

A perfect picnic spot for a glorious sunny afternoon - try the field next to the castle car park , with a view of the lovely Norman church and the splash of the river Monnow yards away.
Overall we both had a really great time and felt really calm the whole time we were at the castle and village, there is a real special atmosphere in this Castle.
