- ScambusterSZSydney, Australia1,833 contributionsThis makes a very nice day out or half day depending on your timing.
There is a large car park at the entrance along with a visitors centre and public rest rooms.
The walk is partly a track and partly a boardwalk through the swamp/ marshes. You can walk all the way to the lake or a short loop to the large pond.
You can see birdlife though its get a little busy on the weekends in season. THe cafe at the visitors centre serves up decent meals and occasionally they have some market stalls in the carpark.Written March 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Yes - gorgeous Jodo sect temple inside a deceptively simple exterior.
But REALLY go for the current Chief Priest Narita-san.
If you are lucky enough to visit when he is working and has time - you are in for a treat because he is a lively, funny, wonderful interpreter of all things Buddhist and particularly the temple in his charge.
He'll demonstrate the drum and chime sounding...show you the healing Buddha with the detached hand that you touch to your afflicted body part and much much more.
He speaks English, but even more than that - he is just one of life's shining individuals. You'll feel invigorated just meeting him :-)Written September 13, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's quant, sort of, with quite a few dilapidated timber buildings scattered amount the other uninspiring buildings.
The coast is quite spectacular heading West through a long tunnel and the surf is quite heavy smashing at the seawalls right along the coast.
There are good few restaurants a couple of blocks into town but we didn't find any harbour side eatery as one might envisage from its location on the map.
The Iwanai Ski area is nearby but limited with only 1 lift we saw, and its mainly for Cat Skiing trips.
Ok for a half day trip drive if you need a day off skiing but not a highly rateable place.
You can head there from Kutchan in about 30min and head back via Rykoshin Niseko/ Moiwa (longer return).Written February 17, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Just a nice to visit place if you have time . I will not feel sorry if you offer to stay in the hotel to relax.Written September 13, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dan EHong Kong, China126 contributionsThis museum is an interesting building and inside it are numerous works by Nishimura, a very privileged and wealthy man who was sent to Paris as a young artist. He found success there and I believe his family put together this building in his honor. The fact that he was able to go back and forth between Hokkaido and Europe back in his day is unique and his work reflects that. An interesting retreat for a rainy day, probably only need 45min or so to go through. They had an interesting photography exhibition going on when we went which showed how difficult farming was in Hokkaido in the early 1900's and that was truly interesting. The photos showed very humble lifestyles of the Hokkaido people and how difficult it was to obtain good potatoes and corn back in the day. Even though the photography exhibition was separate from the works by Nishimura, we really appreciated the exhibit.Written September 22, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Adam GLondon, UK240 contributionsThe owner's reason for putting a Picasso collection up here, in the hills overlooking the quiet, out-of-the-way seaside snow town of Iwanai, will have to remain a mystery. So it's worth a visit for the surreal experience alone, going from Japanes countryside to wandering a gallery that wouldn't be out of place in any metropolitan area.
Having said that it's also a very clean, bright museum with a great Picasso collection and a separate wing featuring a wider range of artists, both Japanese and other. Amazing views of the bay from the top floor as well so try to time it for sunset if you can.Written October 4, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
