We had a wonderful time in Apo Island. We met Madame Ellen from the locals who served us lunch and also let us stay in their mini restaurant facing the sea while resting from our snorkelling. She showed us around inside the village and we saw where the locals live. She is such a gem to the community. The guides were very friendly and helpful. The town still has a rustic authenticity to it. Do visit her place. Just on the island where they serve some freshly cooked lunch.

Don't be fooled by the 600m sign off the path. It is much longer and takes around 12-15 mins to get to the deck. If you feel you've gone off the path, you haven't, its just not that clear! The views at the end are beautiful and the green from the trees and different blues from the sea are spectacular.

I counted 307 steps, not sure if I haven't missed any...
It is a great morning exercise to see the sunrise or you can do it in the evening to see the sunset.
It takes roughly 20 minutes to get to the top.

Attractions in Apo Island are simple: snorkeling, diving and taking short hikes to the nice-view places. The walk to the old lighthouse takes about 30 minutes and some 1000 Kcal and 2 litters is sweat. Top of the hill does not offer any spectacular views but the whole activity is a nice morning exercise.

Really peaceful wondering through the village. You'd be surprised how large the school is despite the small population of the island. Get a look in to see how the locals choose to live peaceful lives on this island. Nice close nit community.

This is one trek I will not forget quickly - simply for the thrills it gave! I slipped and fell twice (once nearly down a steep cliff!) and got lost twice. It took all of 3 hours to negotiate it, and often, there was no path - I had to make my own, listening to the waves and figuring out the direction of the beach!

Davids trek runs from Apo island light house, along lush greenery, next to overhanging cliffs, and ends at a coconut grove near Cogon village and thence Kan Uran village. It is tricky, as often, there is no visible path (see the photos). Some of the view sen route were beautiful - not as outstanding as the view deck, but nice enough to enjoy - especially near the cliffs - there is lush green foliage on the other side of the northern lagoon. I found the steps closer to the vilalge cute - they were just wooden coconut stems placed along the slope! At one place, there was a railing fashioned out of branches.

My most enduring memory - was of sitting on these very " steps" and watching the tall coconut trees as they swayed to the wind. They looked majestic! Till I heard a " plop" - a coconut fell - and I was thankful it was not on my head!

Towards the end, once you reach these steps., the trek becomes easy - just watch out for a barking dog near the village! The people in the village do not speak English, but are helpful.

    Returning to Liberty -
After the trek, to return to Libertys, you do nt have to go through this long trek! Just pass the 20 houses in this village, walk along the shore towards the lagoon, and then walk the lagoon trail - it is a clear wide path - up the "Steps of a thousand names" into Apo village.

Highly recommended for people who want adventure. Not recommended for people wanting a pleasant trek.

    Advice and tips -
    1) Wear good trekkign shoes - the path can be slippery
    2) DO NOT attempt on a rainy day - you will slip and fall - some of the falls can be fatal
    3) Bring your own water - preferably in a back pack
    4) Wear a big hat - it gets sunny and exhausting
    5) Wear full clothes with your arms and legs covered - there are a lot of buses one walks past and it is easy to get bruised if you are wearing less clothes
    6) If attempting the trek alone, bring your cell phone - that way, if you get lost, you can call for help
    7) Do the trek during the daylight hours - I did it in the afternoon, and reached back in time to see sunset from Libertys

Witchys trail runs along the coast of Apo island, near the village, just after Libertys - and has a small house at the end. It was fun and took us around 20 minutes one way unhurriedly. At the end, we just sat on the big rocks, playing with a dog who had followed us and watching the waves.

    How to reach -
Just walk south, after Libertys and the church - along the beach, past the fishing boats and along the shore. There are round concrete circles where you step and continue to walk. No hand rails in most parts so do walk slowly. You can walk in flip flops, but I recommend something like crocs or rubber sandals, since you will need them if you wish to step on the rocks. Also, it can be sharp if your slipper falls down!
