- Bonbon foodieMiyazaki, Japan888 contributionsSekino-o waterfall selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan. It is about 30 kilometers away from Kirishima Shrine, a sightseeing spot.
霧島神宮から30キロくらい離れています。車で45分くらいでしょうか。日本の滝名選100にも選ばれている滝です。無料で見ることができます。Written August 29, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I've never hiked in Japan before, and it was my first time in Kyushu, but I think that I've started with one of the best mountains!
Lorraine, a very kind and friendly French girl from Kobayashi City Promotion Co., took me there by car from Kannogo Onsen (the place where I stayed), and guided me to the top.
Before starting the hike, be sure to buy some water at the vending machines if you don't have some with you, because you won't find it on the top.
The landscape changes as you go up. All the way to the top, you can admire fascinating volcanic landscapes with numerous shaped volcanic cones and craters.
According to the Japanese Mythology, Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the Sun Goddess, threw his spear on the summit of this mountain, the same spear that he used to create the island of Japan. Finding the spear at the top and admiring the breathtaking panorama from the top has been astonishing.
I recommend the use of sunscreen, sunglasses and hiking shoes. In total, it took us about 3 hours.Written April 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are some really tall and original old stone steps up to the main part of the shrine. There are also places to get blessed water for your wallet (brings good fortune) and also a rock split in half in a pond. I enjoy going to this shrine near Golden Week because there is a Wysteria shelf in the parking lot that is pretty. Usually the shrine is empty and can be a bit difficult to locate. Worth the trouble, though.Written September 22, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- passionfruitsinSingapore, Singapore191 contributionsWas in Japan to see Sakura blooming and was recommended to Mochio park instead of being in overcrowded Tokyo. Boy was I Glad that the recommendation was spot on.it was Sakura Sakura everywhere. Sakura trees covered the park and run for 2 km along a road which one can walk along. The trees are of the sumeyoshino variety and covered the whole park in light pink. If one were to climb up the shrine, you can have a helicopter view of the whole park to see it's splendour. No wonder this is one of the Topp 100 spots to observe the cherry blossom in Japan.
Worth making the trip all the way here if one is really making a trip just to be awe by cherry trees in its full bloom, which is the reason we are here in the 1st place.

I figured it must be very small but was pleasantly surprised. The drive up to the temple went through a famous park in the area which was very busy but there was no one up on the hill. We were greeted by a beautiful walk up to the temple. Along the path spider lilies were blooming and literally everything was green with moss. When we came back down from the temple we were greeted by old man from the temple. He invited us in, gave us tea, signed out temple books, and then explained why the temple has dogs. The temple is for praying for a safe birth, and there is a pun with the word of "to be" and the word for "dog" so they have "dog days" which does not translate well into English. He was super nice and his dog was also super sweet.
This is a nice walk and a nice place to visit if you have a car and some spare time. It's very quiet even though Takajo Park is super busy.Written September 22, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is easy to walk up the back of the falls to get to these and it is not unusual to see people walking on them. Outside of rainy season the rocks are very exposed and you can walk almost all the way out to the top of the waterfall if you dare. There is nothing and no one to stop you. Be careful as they can be slippery and if a sudden gush of water were to come you could be swept away. This is a nice place to see sakura in early/mid March, or fall leaves in late November!Written September 22, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CaffineFreekCanberra, Australia105 contributionsThis shrine is right in the middle of Miyakonojo. There is a nice park near the shrine and on Some Sundays there is a flea market there. The shrine itself has sakura trees and some trees with nice fall foliage. I always find I almost drive right past it because the big tori gate is down a small road. Nice for a stroll and a temple visit.Written September 22, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
