A giant, beautiful waterfall with easy access to the sandbars below, this waterfall cascades into the Egawa River at an impressive height and breadth of 20 x 65 meters. A mystical legend has it that a giant serpent lives in the poor at its base. Tinged with green in summer and crimson in autumn, the beauty of the waterfall changes with the seasons.

Yamaage isn't your typical Japanese festival. This event stretches across three days and features a parade of spectacular neighborhood floats, a mikoshi (portable shrine) procession, and, the highlight of the event, outdoor performances of kabuki (traditional Japanese theater) - all throughout the weekend.

The kabuki stage and backdrops are created by residents of the town and are made from wood, bamboo, and traditional local paper called "washi." The namesake of the festival are three mountain (yama) backdrops of ascending size that are painstakingly crafted and painted before the festival, then rise (age) for each performance. The mountains and other set pieces are transported by hand and cart to each new performance location throughout the day. At night, you can watch as the stage hands literally run the set pieces down the street to their final performance.

I can't recommend this festival enough! Access it via the Karasuyama Line from Utsunomiya and Hoshakuji Stations. Make it a day trip from Utsunomiya (1 hour by train) or even Tokyo (~2 hours by train). The city is even implementing an English tour guide program this year. Well worth the visit!

I did not take it from home at 1 o'clock but I went for the first time. I gave a present to my father when I tasted Daiginjo (dry) of Higashi Shika. It's a moderately dry, tasty and smooth, sweet and delicious. Also purchase sake brewed cream cheese. Fluffy sake (Higashi Fuji) smells faintly at the moment of eating a bite, and the richness and richness of the cheese makes me want a sake rather than a wine. Impact is strong.
