- C HMoscow, Russia52 contributionsThis was a nice little stop while exploring the local area. We spent some time away from Tokyo, enjoying being by the ocean so the quiet nature was quite welcome. I'd say it's not worth going to Isumi for this lighthouse / beach, but if you're already there it's worth a stop.Written October 10, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Susan WIsumi, Japan4 contributionsI just went up out of curiosity and was completely bowled over by the atmosphere.
Getting up to the temple is a hard, steep walk. Don't forget to pick up a stick to lean on! They're down at the entrance and free but you have to return them.
When I arrived at the temple compound, puffing hard, it was as if I'd been transported back two or three hundred years.
The silence! And the complete lack of the trappings of modern day life. The trees surrounding the grounds hide all the ugliness: no houses, no vehicles, electricity pylons, nothing.
Totally unusual and beautiful experience.Written September 12, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Take the walk around the back of the shrine and you'll come out at a spot overlooking the famous "Hidden Beach" of Ohara. THis is where Fuji TV filmed "Summer Nude". Pay your respects at this mystical and healing spot, and enjoy a picnic overlooking the ocean. Great.Written March 7, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- kaorucobyIsumi, Japan3 contributionsThe highlight of the event is when local residents carry mikoshi (portable shrines) and wade into the sea in an energetic frenzy. This is called Shiofumi in Japanese which is quite frenetic and wild. the Owakareshiki (farewell to the gods event) followed by Shiofumi is when the participants carry the mikoshi through the streets and run in a circle in the evening. This is also one of the must-see moments during the festival.Written August 15, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EreinaCharlottesville, VA253 contributionsMy Japanese cousins brought me here while I was visiting from USA. The octopus and shellfish are locally famous and delicious! The kids loved the organic sugar cotton candy. Unfortunately, there were only a few vendors open due to the corona virus scare and government advice to stay away from large crowds. Still, we had a great time. We picked up some vacuum packed fish for lunch the next day and it was delicious! The fish were much bigger than the kind we normally get on Tokyo 😋Written February 27, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
