Wonderful rose garden
Aug 2020 • Solo
The castle was closed for renovations, but the rose garden was open and free to visit. I found this old courtyard transformed in a garden exceptional beautiful. So many different kind of roses in all colours. If you are going to Eltville in the summertime, don't miss it.

Enchanting Eltville
Jul 2018 • Couples
Thank you fellow Trippers for recommending a stop off in this delightful place. It felt as if we were in Disneyland or Epcot with Rapunzel's castle in the centre. Fairly quiet when we were there which gave us time to wander up & down the streets & admire the houses from 14th/16th century . There is a TIC in the castle -not sure if you can go up the tower but also a lovely garden with pretty flowers to admire. The nearby streets then take you down to the riverside -our first view of the Rhine !

As we visited Eltville am Rhein on New Years’ Day 2018 we weren’t surprised to find the tourist office in the Electoral Castle closed. But we were able to have a walk around the castle grounds. We crossed a high bridge to the courtyard and walked down some stairs to the dry moat to have a close look at the thick walls. In the summer there is a rose garden in the moat, but in winter there was mainly grass.

We continued to the Rhine waterfront to enjoy the view from there. The 14th century white tower house, with its cute corner turrets, is very picturesque. In fact it seems almost too good to be true, like a Disney-like reconstruction.

Great place to start your visit of Eltville. When I lived nearby, there were several festivals anchored at the Electoral Castle. The nearby rose garden is beyond fabulous!

The Eltville Castle Museum offers an excellent museum on Gutenberg and the innovation of letter press printing
Oct 2016 • Friends
The castle history and beautiful gardens are interesting here, but the bigger deal is the museum upstairs in the castle tower. On display are an Italian made, handset type printing press and a short tour of the history of letter press printing. This innovation from Johannes Gutenberg, who lived at the castle for some years, revolutionized communication and brought books to the masses. Of particular interest are actual pages from the famous Gutenberg Bible and other books made around the time of Gutenberg. The museum is small and intimate, and affords the viewer plenty to look at and appreciate. Also interesting is the history of how the museum came to be in the 1930s through a collaboration with Hans Schaefer who owned Hauserpresse printing house in Frankfurt and the Berger of Eltville.

Very nice location near the Rhine. There are several possibilties to eat and drink around the castle - better choice and quality than further up in the old town, at least on Sundays.

Beautiful old castle on the Rhine amidst old Eltville town
Sep 2016 • Family
Beautiful setting in the river in the centre of the Rheingau wine region. Walk the old town on a beautiful summer day, have a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the river. The castle has a tower that can be visited (3 EUR) and there is a rose garden.

The gardens of this wonderful old building, plus the vintage cars which were parked here for a wedding really were a delight!
