Our guide, Naki Kanekoa or "Kana", was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable about the history of the gardens and plant life, and was very engaging and charismatic! Kana provided a history for many of the Hawaiian flora and elaborated on the meaning behind many of the more commonly used Hawaiian words. This really gave us a new point of view that helped us respect the natural beauty of the island and Hawaiian culture even more. The chocoholic ending was also a big win!

This was a wonderful three hour experience in sacred Hawaiian land. Beautiful trails, rare and large plant material and trees and an amazing waterfall. Jesse was our guide and he could not have been any better. A special treat was his beautiful bird Apache, who has about 100 words. The Chocolate demonstration and samples made the day complete. Jesse brought fruit from his trees to share with us and other treats too. We loved it.

So, we did this today, and this review will be long so stay with me. The waterfall is gorgeous, but you only see it from a distance. The guide was wonderful, but this is not a hike, meaning there is more talking than walking. The garden is stunning. If you want to contribute to a non profit , and help this organization, then this is a good activity. If you are budget tight , but want to see similiar terrain and waterfalls you can actually get next to, and swim in ect, choose the nearby Twin Falls, as it is free. We enjoyed the activity and scenic gardens, and the chocolate was a nice touch. The plant life and history was interesting, if you have the budget for this, go for it, but there are many other water falls you can see on Maui up close at no charge. We glady made this donation and we loved the beauty.

So, we wanted a casual hike for sure, but this wasn't even a hike. It was a tour through a small section of forest/jungle. The beautiful waterfall in the picture? We couldn't go anywhere near it. I wasn't expecting to go for a swim or anything, but all you get is glimpse through the trees from 50 yards away. The chocolate was a few varieties in small squares, not very impressive. Also, we got eaten alive by mosquitoes, thank goodness I wore pants, but I had almost 20 bites on my arms by the end.

FRIENDS THIS GUY PUT A FAKE REVIEW. HE NEVER VISITED THE GARDENS. WE DON'T WHY HE IS TRYING TO HURT A GOOD CHARITY BUT OUR LAWYERS WILL BE CONTACTING HIM SOON. SORRY FOR THE CAPS. We Are Voted Best Of Maui! 99% of the people love their visit to one Of Hawaii's most beautiful sacred ancient heritage estate & gardens. People that visit, visit because they want to help a good cause. These folks were there under false pretenses, as 99% of the people that visit, visit because the want to help create a legacy here on Maui. Friends know on this hike, we take you thru a beautiful tropical rainforest with tropical jungle you get to see the ancient water cave and tunnel of Mo'o Kana, The worlds Largest Prehistoric Ferns, A Hawaiian Rainforest, and you get to see the very first waterfall on the way to Hana! It is a very large tropical estate with a beautiful Cacao Grove. Friends is not an honest review, our legal team will be contacting them. Again 99% of the people love their time at the gardens and love to help a good cause. It is so sad that some people are just very difficult to please and don't really visit in order to help a good charity.

We booked this hike because our hiking time was limited, but we wanted to enjoy the rainforest with coca plants and felt a desire to contribute to some conservation efforts. We've hiked in other rainforests in other parts of the world. This one is nothing special. The "hike" is relatively short. The vistas are not particularly inspiring, unless this is the only bit of jungle you have ever seen. The one waterfall is also nothing special. The featured plants are also not terribly unique. The tall trees were pretty, for sure, but we have had much better hiking in other places. The chocolate class is a bit of a joke. None of what they have is actually grown on site and the chocolate making experience was far from gourmet or even really authentic. Our guide was polite and earnest, but that doesn't really make up for paying nearly $100 per person (so-called donation) plus tip to walk through this small space. We were told the money is meant to restore these forgotten king's gardens, which are indeed overgrown with non-native species, but we wonder if that claim is on the same level of authenticity as the chocolate class. The proprietors ask that photos not be posted from such a sacred place, but I fear that might be because they would be less than inviting to future visitors. The few we took were not remarkable.

98% of folks love this tour, and give us a rave review, but as the old saying goes, beauty and fun is the in eye of the beholder. We truly wish you well and that you have a lovely rest of your stay while on Maui. Happy to gift you a refund of your donation if need be.

THEY FORGOT WE MADE A RESERVATION!

I had made the reservation well in advance (a week prior) and then had it confirmed it would be the day and time we had planned for via text 2 days prior. We drove an hour to the location only to find NO ONE was there. Finally, a woman with her hair in a towel came out of a cottage (the tour had mentioned it was on a private property so this was not surprising) and asked who we were. When we said we were here for the tour, she said, “Oh, looks like you weren’t on the books. This happens sometimes.” ?!?! She then told us we could enjoy seeing some sites around here and she would refund us our money “if I can’t locate someone…go enjoy and maybe we can try and contact each other.” I pointed out that I had sent three texts to the designated number given but she hadn’t received them and that there was no reception in the area. She ended up texting us (we went to an area with some reception) about 40 minutes later that she was refunding the money. No explanation and only “I’m sorry about the confusion. Hope you had a good time!”

No apology for taking away our precious vacation time, which was more than the cost of the trip for us! DO NOT DO THIS TRIP IF YOU WANT A GUARANTEED EXCURSION. DON’T WASTE YOUR VACATION TIME LIKE WE DID.

"FOLKS" PLEASE KNOW THERE WAS ACCIDENT, NOTE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED EVER BEFORE, IF YOU LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER REVIEWS THERE IS NO OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS EVER HAPPENING. Again so sorry the person who was volunteering to help and came in at the last moment was not up to speed, they did not have a towel on their head, it was a head wrap as they had been recovering from a serious illness where they have lost a lot of their hair. Again our sincere apologies.

It’s hard to classify this tour - it’s better understood as a cultural experience - learning the history of the island from the people and the flora. Yes you walk through rainforest and yes chocolate is a key element but the beauty of it shines through the hosts’ love of the island and its special power, and the invitation to bring out your own manna to share. Realistically Maui is in fifth gear most of the time and this experience will slow you down and make you savor the time you spend there. Jesse was a superb guide. Highly recommended.

This was by far the best experience we had on Maui. We love guided tours, and this did not disappoint. Our guide, Jesse ("Maui"), was extremely knowledgeable and personable, and we had a great time walking through the gardens and learning about the plants and history. The hike was not extremely challenging, which made it that much easier to keep looking at the lush beauty of the rainforest. It was raining during our hike, but Jesse brought us ponchos and the rain made the gardens all the more beautiful. The chocolate tasting was delicious, and we even got to make our own chocolate! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique experience on Maui led by a local. We had a 7 year old in our group and he was perfectly able to do the hike, and was kept engaged throughout the tour.

My husband and I booked this tour during our honeymoon to Maui because we wanted our money to go to a good cause/conservation. We were blown away with the sight of the 'jungle' and the knowledge of the guide. I didn't even know that chocolate tasting, comparable to a wine tasting experience, even existed! We learned a lot about the ancient Hawaiians, saw the very place they lived and tunnels/walls they built, and learned so much about the plants on the island. The waterfall was beautiful and it was nice to see how respected the area is...no swimming because people still use this water, unfiltered, for drinking nearby! We highly recommend this tour and if Tim is your guide, you're garaunteed to learn a lot!
